Spirits of Anesthesia
| November 1995 | Volume 2, Number 3 |
The formation of a specialty depends on development of a clearly identified body of scientific and clinical material related to its practice. However, it also depends on the formation of organizations and societies where its members may meet to discuss medical, scientific and political issues. The references cited here describe some of the people and problems encountered during the early years of anesthesia, when it ceased being a branch of surgery and began to gain recognition as a specialty in its own right.
