This Issue's Top Story

ASA rebukes CMS rule for jeopardizing patient safety and quality health care
ASA expressed its serious concern regarding the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) decision to adopt a new and untested national policy that will allow Medicare funds to be used to pay untrained providers to diagnose and treat chronic pain. The policy jeopardizes patient safety, lowers the quality of health care and increases the risk for fraud and prescription drug abuse.

Congressional report details regulatory oversight of compounding pharmacies
Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released a report, Compounding Pharmacies, Compounding Risk , stating that the FDA has attempted to rein in activities of compounding pharmacies by issuing warning letters, but the nature of regulatory oversight and gaps in legal authority have led to 23 deaths and at least 86 serious illnesses or injuries in 34 states (not including the most recent outbreak).

Fungal meningitis update - Voluntary recall of unexpired products
Ameridose, LLC, based in Westborough, Mass., is voluntarily recalling all of its unexpired products in circulation, not based on reports of infection, but out of an abundance of caution. The FDA is aware that the voluntary shutdown of Ameridose and the recall of Ameridose products may affect supplies of certain life-saving drugs for some health care systems.

Ether anesthesia article voted most important in NEJM history
The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) asked its readers to vote for their favorite article over the last two centuries. The readers responded with a resounding favorite. The1846 report from Boston surgeon Henry Jacob Bigelow, "Insensibility during Surgical Operations Produced by Inhalation," won the final round of voting against many other significant developments published in the NEJM.

Anesthesiology calendar note from the Wood Library-Museum

The Duke Inhaler of C. R. Stephen, an "Extremes-of-Life" Anesthesiologist

Duke_Inhaler

Just 70 years ago this month, in November of 1942, McGill medical graduate Dr. Ron Stephen began a 3-month anesthetics course. He would co-design the Stephen-Slater nonrebreathing pediatric valve before moving south to co-invent the Duke Inhaler for trichloroethylene. Self-described as an "extremes of life anesthesiologist," Dr. Stephen would author textbooks in both pediatric and geriatric anesthesia.
