Medicare releases billing data - anesthesiologists among lowest-ranked specialties for allowed amounts

Last week, CMS released data on services and procedures furnished to Medicare beneficiaries by health care professionals in 2012. A preliminary review by ASA revealed that, when ranked by Medicare allowed amounts, anesthesiology is among the lowest specialties, with interventional pain management ranked ninth. The data also indicated that Medicare payment charges for both nurse anesthetists and physician anesthesiologists totaled 15 percent.

Wisconsin governor signs physician apology legislation
On April 8, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) signed into law legislation (2013 Wisconsin Act 242) prohibiting the inclusion of a health care provider's apology in a related future lawsuit or administrative hearing. The Wisconsin Society of Anesthesiologists supported this measure (Assembly Bill 120). Congratulations to the Wisconsin members who made this possible!

NY Times features Anesthesiology study on opioids
The New York Times featured a study from Anesthesiology in an article on a surge in opioid prescriptions for pregnant women. The study found that more than 14 percent of pregnant women were prescribed opioids for pain at some point during pregnancy.
