President Elect

J.P. Abenstein, M.D.

John P. Abenstein, M.S.E.E., M.D., currently serves as president-elect of the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA). Dr. Abenstein is a consultant in the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology, and an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Mayo College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. He also serves on the faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Graduate School.

In addition to serving as the Society’s first vice president in 2012 and as an ASA speaker of the House of Delegates since 2009, Dr. Abenstein served on numerous ASA committees throughout his membership including the Committees on Governmental Affairs, and Equipment and Facilities, etc.

Dr. Abenstein currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Minnesota Society of Anesthesiologists, and from 1997-1998 as its president. He also held notable positions with other specialty affiliations throughout his professional career.

At Mayo Clinic, Dr. Abenstein has been actively involved in the management of the organization. He has chaired the institution’s Capital Equipment Committee, Acute Care Monitoring Committee and Workstation Oversight Group. Currently, he is the Medical Director of the Mayo Office of Remote Monitoring.

He also has contributed to various activities outside organized medicine. Dr. Abenstein has been a long-standing member of the Minnesota Blue Cross Blue Shield Medical Policy Committee and the State of Minnesota’s Medical Education and Research Costs Committee. He also chaired Minnesota’s Health Technology Advisory Committee.

Dr. Abenstein received his engineering degrees from Duke University and the University of Wisconsin. He received his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, and completed his residency and fellowship in cardiac anesthesiology at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, also in Chicago. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Prior to joining the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Abenstein was an anesthesiologist in the U.S. Navy. During his Naval Service, he was deployed on the USS Tarawa on Surgical Team 9.

Dr. Abenstein and his wife, Sandra, live in Oronoco, Minn., and have two children.
