Regulatory Activity - American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)

ASA Regulatory Comment Letters: As new regulations are proposed, ASA and its members submit letters commenting on the proposed rules.

Pain Medicine: ASA advocates for its members on issues related to pain medicine. The resources on this page are designed to inform you about federal legislative and regulatory activities that may impact the practice of pain medicine.

Drug Shortages: Anesthesiologists face an unprecedented number of drug shortages. ASA works to keep members informed of the current drug shortages and informs appropriate parties on the impact drug shortages are having on patients.

Electronic Health Record Incentive Program: Physician anesthesiologists with a PECOS designation of "05" maintain a hardship exemption for calendar year 2016. Physician anesthesiologists should not see an adjustment based upon the EHR Incentive Program in payment year 2018.

Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA): MACRA replaced the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), the EHR Incentive Program and the Value-Based Payment Modifier (VM) with three distinct components of the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (Quality, Advancing Care Information and Cost, respectively).

Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS): Members will receive either a negative or neutral adjustment in payment year 2018 on their Part B covered professional services under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) based upon their calendar year 2016 PQRS participation.

Practice Management: ASA offers its members a wide variety of practice management services out of the Advocacy Division in Washington, D.C., designed to help you manage a successful anesthesiology practice.
