Overview

With the changes and challenges in today’s health care environment, the need for more physicians to take on leadership roles is increasingly evident. To help physicians excel in their leadership roles, ASA and ACHE have collaborated to offer MasterClass: Communication, Negotiation and Teamwork. Content for this program was identified based on ASA member survey and assessments, as well as requests made from ASA members.

The program equips physician leaders with skills and practices to communicate and negotiate effectively, supervise solid teams and influence others. This one-day session includes lectures, interactive forums and case-based strategies to positively impact patient care outcomes and improve personal performance.

Target Audience

This session is designed for Physician Executives, Physicians aspiring to Executive, Physician Administrators, Physician-Executive Dyads and Practice Administrators.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session participants will be able to:

  • Identify tactical negotiation methods
  • Develop techniques to bypass road-blocks in teams
  • Recognize appropriate strategies to influence others
  • Identify novel approaches to develop and facilitate a team
  • Apply current techniques in critical conversations that aid in successful outcomes

Speaker: Jeffrey S. Vender, M.D., M.C.C.M., FCCP, M.B.A.
Speaker Jeffrey Vender, MD, MCCM, FCCP, MBA

Jeffrey S. Vender, M.D., M.C.C.M., FCCP, M.B.A., is chair of the department of anesthesiology at NorthShore University Health System, clinical professor of anesthesiology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and emeritus, Harris Family Foundation. Dr. Vender has participated on national committees of various medical organizations, edited several medical texts and published extensively.  He has been an invited lecturer at more than 250 national and international meetings on topics of anesthesiology, critical care and organizational change. He received an M.B.A. from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management in 1998, an M.D. from Northwestern University in 1975, and a B.S. degree in Biology from Northwestern University in 1971.

Craig Deao, M.H.A., is a highly regarded national speaker on leadership, engagement, quality and patient safety. He works with medical staffs and health care executives to create highly reliable organizations. He co-led Studer Group’s journey to become a recipient of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award in 2010. In 2016, Deao harnessed his field experience in health care to author the book, “The E Factor: How Engaged Patients, Clinicians, Leaders, and Employees Will Transform Healthcare.” In addition to his full-time work with Studer Group and Huron, he serves as faculty for the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).

Speaker: Kevin E. O’Connor, CSP
Speaker Kevin O'Connor, CSP

Kevin E. O’Connor, CSP, is a specialist in educating and coaching professionals and serves as faculty for the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). His expertise focuses on the challenges of leadership, influence, innovation and the development of teams of health care executives and their physician leaders. O’Connor teaches at Loyola University Chicago and has taught at the performing arts school Columbia College Chicago. He is the author or co-author of seven books, including the most recent, “Fearless Facilitation.” He is a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), an honor for speaking excellence held by fewer than 600 persons in the world.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ACHE Accreditation Statement

This program is approved for 7.5 ACHE face-to-face education credits. The ACHE face-to-face credit hours that can count towards professional development and working towards ACHE’s board-certified credential, FACHE.
