APSF and FAER Announce Changes to Co-sponsored Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG) Application Process

December 2, 2019
LOI submissions are now open

The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) and Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), related organizations of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), join to provide a second year of the co-sponsored APSF/FAER MRTG. This year, those interested in applying for the APSF/FAER MRTG will need to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) prior to submitting a full application. The submission window for LOIs for this grant is open from December 1, 2019 through January 1, 2020.

“Some of the first patient safety studies in all of medicine took place in the field of anesthesiology. The collaboration of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) is vital to building our future of leading patient safety scientists. It is an honor to be the first combined APSF/FAER MRTG recipient,” said Dr. Alexander Arriaga, M.D., M.P.H., Sc.D., recipient of the 2019 APSF/FAER MRTG.

The grant will provide up to $300,000 in funding over a two-year period, including 60% protected time. It will fund patient safety research directly relevant to the perioperative care of patients, as well as chronic pain and critical care medicine. For this grant, patient safety is defined as the avoidance, prevention and improvement of adverse outcomes or injuries stemming from health care processes. The ultimate goal is that no patient is harmed in a preventable fashion by the medical care they receive.

More information on LOI requirements and the submission process can be found on FAER’s APSF/FAER Mentored Research Training Grant page. LOI’s will be reviewed by members of the APSF/FAER MRTG Grant Review Committee. Applicants will be notified by FAER after a review of the LOI if they have been selected to submit a full research application.
