FAER Grant Recipient Shiqian Shen, M.D. ('16), Awarded National Institute of General Medical Sciences $2,000,000 Maximizing Investigators' Research Award for Early Stage Investigators (R35) Award

Shiquian Shen, M.D., was recently awarded the National Institute of General Medical Science (NIGMS) Maximizing Investigators' Research Award for Early Stage Investigators (MIRA) (R35). The award has a combined direct and indirect cost of $2,000,000 over the course of five years.

Dr. Shen currently works as the Attending Physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Harvard Medical School. He was a 2016 FAER Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG) recipient. Dr. Shen used his FAER funding to research the role of gut microbiota in neuropathic pain.

"I am extremely grateful for the FAER support," said Dr. Shen. "[The] extraordinary support has made a great influence on my research pursuit."

Dr. Shen will use the MIRA funding to continue his research on the role of gut microbiota and postoperative cognitive dysfunction, with a focus on neuro-immune interactions.
