What is the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship Program?

The Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF) program strives to grow the academic talent entering anesthesiology and encourage careers in research. Through the program, FAER provides medical students with a variety of research opportunities within anesthesiology departments that have high-quality research and teaching environments. Anesthesiology departments host FAER medical student fellows for an eight-week period over the summer and support them in focusing on anesthesiology research, training in scientific methods and techniques and learning how to incorporate research into a medical career. When you host a FAER medical student fellow, you can expect:

- Up to two students to participate in research at your institution for eight weeks over the summer.
- To assign the students to a dedicated mentor, who will provide guidance and training in research techniques and scientific methods.
- The opportunity for the students to make a scientific presentation at the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting, during the FAER MSARF Symposium.

Who participates in the MSARF program?

Through a competitive application process, approximately 60 students are "matched" into FAER-funded research fellowships at a host institution each year. Past medical student fellows have not only demonstrated academic merit and achievement but have also served in leadership roles at the ASA Medical Student Component Society, the AMA Medical Student Section, and within anesthesia interest groups at the medical schools. What funding is available for medical student fellows and host departments?Medial student summer fellows receive a $3,200 stipend over eight consecutive weeks paid by the host institution. FAER provides all of the funding for the first student and some of the funding for the second student to the host anesthesiology department.
