OR Management is a relatively new area for residents and experienced anesthesiologists. OR management wasn’t taught in residency programs before 2000, so the vast majority of practicing anesthesiologists have not been exposed to the concepts. The changing environment of health care delivery, advanced technology, and downward pressure on reimbursements are forcing anesthesiologists to reexamine the profession. Expanding anesthesiologists’ skill set to include management skills is the most logical opportunity to increase the value proposition for the entire enterprise in which they work and secure the profession for the future.
