Patient Safety Highlights 2017 - Postoperative Respiratory Depression is a Real Risk for Our Patients: What is Our Responsibility as Perioperative Physicians?

THIS IS AN ONLINE ACTIVITY. Hard copies are not available.

This panel will look at the problem of respiratory depression in the postoperative period from three different perspectives. Firstly, the audience will hear from the intensivist, understanding the magnitude of problem, defining the problem and what it means to the critical care physician as a first responder and in terms of increased admissions to the intensive care unit as a result  of these decompensations. Next, the anesthesiologist's perspective which will look at the quality and safety perspective in terms of designing better hospital quality and practice initiatives to improve outcomes for postoperative patients. Finally, the discussion will move to what current literature says and will focus on: How common is this problem from current evidence? Is there a predictability to this problem? How can the perioperative physician take more ownership and responsibility outside of the PACU and the ICU and allow for a safer recovery period in the postsurgical patient population?
