Item Details

After completing this activity, the participant should be able to: • Discuss the physiopathology of perioperative right ventricular failure • Formulate strategies to manage intraoperative right ventricular failure according to its cause • Propose approaches to monitor and treat patients with right ventricular failure secondary to lung resection • Differentiate between lung isolation and lung separation • Describe currently available methods to achieve lung separation • Discuss the advantages and limitations of endobronchial blockers compared with double-lumen tubes for thoracic surgical procedures • Identify patients at increased risk for perioperative lung injury • Develop an evidence-based intraoperative ventilation strategy to improve postoperative outcomes • Apply recent knowledge of perioperative fluid management and inflammation to decrease the incidence of postoperative respiratory complications in thoracic and nonthoracic surgery • List the factors that potentially predict hypoxemia during one-lung ventilation • Discuss the physiology of one-lung ventilation and the response of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction • Describe the different modalities to restore or improve oxygenation, including ventilatory maneuvers and the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in unique situations
