This pro-con will examine challenges in patient safety that occur during handoff of a critically ill peroperioperative patient. It will also discuss the concept and implementation of a structured handoff protocol with integration into electronic medical record.

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:

1. Review the evidence supporting communication as a top source of medical errors;  

2. Analyze the hypothesis that unstructured handoffs decrease patient safety;

3. Analyze the advantages/disadvantages of electronic medical record handoff integration;

4. Analyze the argument that structured handoff protocols decrease errors and improve patient safety.
