The presentation will discuss the risks of anesthesia and surgery in low-resource settings, the opportunities to advance the safety of surgical patients in those settings and the ways in which they relate to safety initiatives, past and present, in the developed world.

1. Identify the safety profile of surgery in low resource settings;  
2. Compare patient safety initiatives in low resource settings to accomplishments and challenges in high resource settings; 
3. Recognize achievable, scalable and sustainable interventions to reduce surgical mortality in low and middle income countries.
