ASA News: Call for Part 2 Examiner Nominations

The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) is seeking anesthesiologists to assist with its Part 2 (now known as the APPLIED) Examinations. The nomination process will be open until November 15, 2013.

New APPLIED examiners will be selected by the Board of Directors in April 2014, and will serve at their first examination in either October 2014 or in 2015. Individuals may nominate themselves or be nominated by another ABA diplomate. Current ABA Part 2 Examiners are not required to be renominated.

Nominees must satisfy the following minimum requirements:

1) Have a valid, unexpired certificate in anesthesiology.

2) Have been certified no later than 2008.

3) Be actively participating in the MOCA® program.

4) In addition to actively participating in MOCA®, nominees certified in 1999 or earlier must have been recertified or obtained a MOCA® certificate within the past 10 years.

The ABA minimum clinical activity requirement is the practice of anesthesiology or a recognized anesthesiology subspecialty, on average, at least one day per week during 12 consecutive months over the previous three years.

Nominees should be prepared to serve as an APPLIED examiner during one examination administration week each calendar year. They must remain clinically active for their entire tenure as an APPLIED examiner. They must successfully complete the MOCA® program every 10 years. Additionally, they must not participate in any activity that may constitute a conflict of interest, such as practice oral examinations when a fee is charged and courses devoted solely to preparing candidates for ABA certification examinations.

The ABA is transitioning to a new structure for the APPLIED Examination as a part of the Staged Examinations program. Beginning in January 2017, in addition to the Structured Oral Examination (SOE), the APPLIED Examination will include an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Beginning in 2015 all APPLIED Examinations will be administered in the ABA’s new assessment center located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Examiners will be invited to one examination every 12 months. The ABA covers examiners’ reasonable travel, hotel expenses, and provides modest service and travel per diems.

Most examiners derive a strong sense of satisfaction from providing an important service to the profession. Examiners receive outstanding continuing medical education (CME) during each week of examination activity, for which the ABA officially acknowledges CME credit that may be reported to the American Medical Association (AMA) for its Physician’s Recognition Award.

The ABA seeks examiners from private practice as well as academic medical centers and will ask character referees to comment about how nominees stay current in their practice, how they interact with their surgical and anesthesia colleagues, and their area of specialty.

For those who are interested, a letter of nomination along with the nominee’s email and postal addresses, telephone number and current Curriculum Vitae, as well as the name and email and postal addresses of three ABA diplomates who could serve as referees, should be sent by November 15, 2013, to the ABA.

Nominations may be sent via email to or mailed to the American Board of Anesthesiology, Inc., c/o Part 2 Examiner Nominations, 4208 Six Forks Road, Suite 1500, Raleigh, NC, 27609-5765.

Nominations Period Opens November 15 for 2015 Committees and Chairs

ASA is now accepting nominations for 2015 committee membership and committee chair positions. For a complete list of current ASA committees and their members and chairs, see

  • Sitting members of committees whose terms expire in October 2014 must reapply in order to be considered for reappointment.
  • Adjunct members with appointment terms that expire in October 2014 must also reapply to receive consideration.
  • ASA members may recommend others for appointments; such nominees must also complete a “Self-Application for Committee Appointment.”
  • Members may also complete a self-nomination form if they wish to volunteer for service.

Nomination forms will be available on the “For Members” section of the ASA website commencing November 15. To standardize the nomination process and better facilitate appointments, ASA requires the use of these electronic forms. If you are nominating someone for a committee position, the individual will only be considered if he or she has personally completed a 2015 Committee Self-Nomination Form. This is intended to ensure that individuals nominated are willing to serve.

ASA is fortunate to have many able volunteers seeking nomination; not all nominees can be appointed, as there are a limited number of positions and because ASA seeks a proper balance of continuity, experience, diversity and new talent on each committee. A secondary consideration in a committee nominee is whether he/she has the potential to someday serve as a committee chair.

ASA’s foremost goal is effective and productive committees; therefore, please limit recommendations to individuals who have the interest, time and commitment to serve. Nominations for committee membership will be accepted through January 15, 2014.
