Statement on Respiratory Monitoring During Endoscopic Procedures
Developed By: Committee on Ambulatory Surgical Care
Last Amended: October 23, 2019 (original approval: October 21, 2009)
Monitoring for exhaled carbon dioxide should be conducted during endoscopic procedures in which sedation is provided with propofol alone or in combination with opioids and/or benzodiazepines, and especially during procedures on the upper gastrointestinal tract. Careful attention to airway management must be provided during complex upper endoscopic procedures and procedures performed in the prone position where ventilatory monitoring, airway maintenance, and resuscitation may be especially difficult..
