Introducing New FAER Directors
Two new directors have been named to the FAER Board of Directors.
At the March 1996 ASA Board of Directors Interim Meeting, Charles
W. Otto, M.D., was confirmed as a director to immediately replace
William D. Owens, M.D., who resigned from the FAER Board when
he was elected First Vice-President of ASA. In addition to Dr.
Otto, Melville Q. Wyche, Jr., M.D., has been appointed to a new
position on the Board, beginning in October 1996.
Although not the first, Dr. Otto is the only current FAER director
to have received an ASA research award in the past. Currently,
he is Professor of Anesthesiology and Associate Professor of Medicine
at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. Dr.
Otto has been at the University of Arizona since 1975, when he
finished his residency in anesthesiology at the Massachusetts
General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He had completed a residency
in internal medicine at the University of Kentucky-Lexington before
joining the U.S. Army and serving in Vietnam. His major interest
is in critical care medicine and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Dr. Otto has been an active member and held offices in a variety
of anesthesiology societies and other medical associations and
has served on several editorial boards.
Dr. Wyche is currently Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology at
Howard University, Washington, D.C. He interrupted his residency
to serve in the U.S. Army in Japan. He returned to a residency
in anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he
also completed a fellowship in anesthesiology. Dr. Wyche remained
on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania until accepting
the chairship of the Department of Anesthesiology at Howard University
in 1988. He is a member of a number of anesthesiology societies
and other medical associations. He has served on the ASA Committee
on Equipment and Facilities and the Subcommittee on Respiration.
His publications include articles, reviews, editorials, chapters
and abstracts.
Each FAER Director serves without compensation and contributes
$1,000 per year to the FAER Endowment Fund. In addition, FAER
Board meetings are held in conjunction with larger association
meetings so that travel and hotel costs are met by the Board members.
The FAER Board of Directors and staff welcome these two new members
and look forward to their participation in FAER activities.
