Carl C. Hug, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., of the Emory University School of Medicine and Vice-President of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Board of Directors, will moderate a panel titled "A Consumer's Guide to the Benefits of FAER Awards" at the ASA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The session will take place on Tuesday, October 22, 1996, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dr. Hug will begin the panel presentations with his perspective on FAER, and six former ASA or FAER research grant recipients will follow with their views on how FAER research funding affected their career development.

The presenters will be Robert E. Shangraw, M.D., Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, who will discuss beginning a research program with a FAER grant; Michael M. Todd, M.D., University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, Iowa, describing FAER contributions to an established research enterprise; Roderic G. Eckenhoff, M.D., University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who will offer time-management strategies; William L. Lanier, Jr., M.D., Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, presenting how to set the tone of a career in an institution through a FAER award; David S. Warner, M.D., Ph.D., Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, commenting on using FAER awards to leverage time, space and support from the "boss"; and Simon Gelman, M.D., Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, presenting the view of the "boss." Introducing New FAER Directors

Two new directors have been named to the FAER Board of Directors. At the March 1996 ASA Board of Directors Interim Meeting, Charles W. Otto, M.D., was confirmed as a director to immediately replace William D. Owens, M.D., who resigned from the FAER Board when he was elected First Vice-President of ASA. In addition to Dr. Otto, Melville Q. Wyche, Jr., M.D., has been appointed to a new position on the Board, beginning in October 1996.

Although not the first, Dr. Otto is the only current FAER director to have received an ASA research award in the past. Currently, he is Professor of Anesthesiology and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. Dr. Otto has been at the University of Arizona since 1975, when he finished his residency in anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He had completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Kentucky-Lexington before joining the U.S. Army and serving in Vietnam. His major interest is in critical care medicine and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Dr. Otto has been an active member and held offices in a variety of anesthesiology societies and other medical associations and has served on several editorial boards.

Dr. Wyche is currently Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology at Howard University, Washington, D.C. He interrupted his residency to serve in the U.S. Army in Japan. He returned to a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed a fellowship in anesthesiology. Dr. Wyche remained on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania until accepting the chairship of the Department of Anesthesiology at Howard University in 1988. He is a member of a number of anesthesiology societies and other medical associations. He has served on the ASA Committee on Equipment and Facilities and the Subcommittee on Respiration. His publications include articles, reviews, editorials, chapters and abstracts.

Each FAER Director serves without compensation and contributes $1,000 per year to the FAER Endowment Fund. In addition, FAER Board meetings are held in conjunction with larger association meetings so that travel and hotel costs are met by the Board members. The FAER Board of Directors and staff welcome these two new members and look forward to their participation in FAER activities.
