Waivers Offered to Retired and Disabled Members

Members are reminded that dues for 1997 may be waived for applicants for retired membership if a properly completed application is received by the ASA Executive Office prior to May 1, 1997, and if the application receives component society approval by December 31, 1997.

To qualify for retired status, a member must have a minimum of 10 years active membership and be completely retired from the clinical practice of anesthesiology.

A member who is unable to practice for a period of six months or more because of a disability also can apply for a waiver of dues. Please contact the Membership Department for the appropriate form. Disability waivers must have component society approval and be received by ASA prior to May 1, 1997.

'Calendars for Meetings' Booklet Entries Invited

Twice each year, in January and July, ASA publishes a "Calendars for Meetings" booklet, which serves as an aid to ASA members by providing information about continuing education courses, seminars and meetings in anesthesiology over the next five years. The booklet further helps to provide department chairs, program directors, component society officers and subspecialty society leaders with information that could prevent overlaps and conflicts in meeting schedules.

The next edition of "Calendars for Meetings" will be distributed with
the July 1997 ASA NEWSLETTER. The deadline for submissions for the booklet is June 1, 1997. Entries must be submitted in writing and received at the ASA Executive Office by the
deadline. Submissions will not be taken by telephone.

For further information or to obtain submission forms, contact the ASA Executive Office, Communications Department, 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573, or call (847) 825-5586; e-mail <communications@ASAhq.org>.

Nominations Sought for Media Award

Each year, the American Society of Anesthesiologists accepts entries for the ASA Media Award, an award given to one or more outstanding media presentations that effectively inform and educate the public about the practice of anesthesiology.

The Committee on Communications encourages members to submit or nominate local media presentations from broadcast (television or radio) and print (newspaper or magazine) media. The more interest generated in this award will result in a greater number of presentations on the subject of anesthesiology.

The winner receives a plaque
and the opportunity to attend the
presentation ceremony during the ASA Annual Meeting. The 1997 Media Award will be presented on Sunday, October 19, at the ASA
Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.

Deadline for the submission of entries is July 1, 1997, for media presentations released between July 1, 1996, and June 30, 1997. Any entries received after the deadline will be carried over to the next year.

Last year's Media Award recipients were Mark Astendig for his television program, "Surgery Simulator," which aired on "Dateline NBC" on December 5, 1995, and John Stupak for his radio program "Sunday Rounds," which aired on "Consultation Radio Network" in Baltimore, Maryland on January 21, 1996.

All entries should be sent to Margaret G. Pratila, M.D., Chair, Committee on Communications, American Society of Anesthesiologists, 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573; e-mail <communications@ASAhq.org>.

Journal to Publish Practice Parameter; Reprints Available

The journal Anesthesiology is scheduled to print the new practice parameter approved by the ASA House of Delegates in October 1996.

"Practice Guidelines for Chronic Pain Management: A Report by the American Society of Anesthesiologists Task Force on Pain Management, Chronic Pain Section" will be published in the April 1997 issue of Anesthesiology. It is the eighth practice parameter issued by ASA in recent years in an effort to provide workable practice guidelines for a variety of anesthesia services.

Within three weeks after the journal publication, reprints of the document will be available through the ASA Publications Department. A single copy is available to members at no cost; multiple copies are $2 each.

Reprints are also available for ASA's other practice guidelines on:

Boston Workshop to Address Bioethics

Ethical dilemmas run through the practice of anesthesiology. ASA will address these in the Workshop
on Practical Bioethics for the Anesthesiologist. This program will
be held on July 19-20, 1997 at the Westin Hotel Copley Place in Boston, Massachusetts.

The workshop will address these questions: How do I appropriately honor a patient's request not to be resuscitated in the operating room? How do I fulfill my obligation to obtain informed consent when I only meet the patient a few minutes before surgery? Where can I get help when I have a problem?

This program will equip the participant with a foundation to recognize and untangle current and future ethical quandaries. The faculty will provide practical advice to make resolving these dilemmas easier. Ample time will be allowed for questions.

David B. Waisel, M.D., is the program chair. He will speak on "What Bioethics Can Do for You" and "Do Business Ethics Count in Anesthesiology?" The other faculty and their topics are:

  • Susan K. Palmer, M.D., "Ethical Concerns in Obstetric Anesthesia" and "Ethical Issues in Quality Improvement";
  • David M. Rothenberg, M.D., "Ethical Anesthetic Management of the Jehovah's Witness" and "An Anesthesiologist's Perspective on Physician-Assisted Death";
  • Robert D. Truog, M.D., "A Pragmatic Approach for DNR in the O.R." and "The Oracle of Apollo at Delphi: The Ethics Consultation";
  • Gail A. Van Norman, M.D., "(Mis)Informed Consent: An Ethical Problem in the Operating Room?" and "Brain Dead, or Only Mostly Dead -What's the Difference, I'm Just the Anesthesiologist!"

The faculty will also lead a "Morbidity and Mortality Conference: Help the Panel With Their Most Difficult Cases or Stump Them With Yours."

ASA is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education programs for physicians.

ASA designates this continuing medical education program for 12 credit hours in category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

Registration is suggested by June 19, 1997. Registration fees are $200 for ASA active members, $100 for resident members and $550 for nonmembers.

A block of rooms is being held at the Westin Hotel Copley Place until June 27, 1997. A room reservation form will be sent to registrants upon receipt of registration. The form should be returned to the hotel by the above date.
