| ASA at a Glance |
The following figures were compiled by ASA staff from available
membership data as of April 8, 1997. Percentages reflect just
less than 1 percent of unaccountable data due to individual member
records with insufficient information.
The ASA Demographics survey is mailed annually to members based
on their month of birth or when a change in their practice occurs
(change of address, change in membership status, etc.). The survey
requests demographic information about the member's mode of practice,
years in practice, age, gender, etc.
Membership by Age
The greatest number of ASA members (37.9 percent) are between
the ages of 35-44. The second largest group (22.9 percent) includes
ages 45-54.
Membership by Gender

Membership Status
Active members make up the largest segment (66 percent) of ASA's
total membership with resident members comprising about 14 percent.

Total ASA Membership = 34,514
Primary Modes of Practice

These figures represent 79 percent of ASA active members who
have returned physician demographic surveys and do not include
residents who cannot stipulate practice affiliations. While the
percentages may not reflect the entire ASA membership, they are
indicative of the current trend toward private group practice.
