Welcome to San Diego!
ASA Annual Meeting Social Activities Program

Rosemarie Marshall Johnson, M.D., Chair
Committee on Local Arrangements

In October, we have a treat in store for you! ASA's first-time Annual Meeting visit to the beautiful city of San Diego, California, offers you many opportunities to enjoy the history, culture, entertainment, shopping and dining that are all elements of this gracious city.

Long known for its Spanish-style, red-tiled roofs and Mediterranean architecture, San Diego is no longer a sleepy little town nestled in the southwestern corner of the country. Not only is there world-class entertainment like the Old Globe Theatre and the La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego is home to fine dining, late night jazz clubs and numerous, challenging golf courses.

A notable feature when visiting San Diego is the number of activities suitable for children. San Diego is a very family-friendly place. The San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park and Sea World are just the start for family fun. There are also water activities such as sailing, fishing and beach-going close to the downtown hotels. The Children's Museum, which is packed with interactive exhibits for all ages, is within walking distance from the San Diego Hyatt and San Diego Marriott hotels, which are the two coheadquarter hotels for the 1997 ASA Annual Meeting on October 18-22.

San Diego's proximity to the Mexican border makes it possible to spend an afternoon shopping in Tijuana. Other social activity choices include a leisurely lunch and shopping trip to the beautiful seaside village of La Jolla, or a history-packed tour of San Diego's Mission and Old Town area.

There's also San Diego's Balboa Park offering 14 museums that cover such diverse topics as aerospace, automobiles, model railroads, archeology, art, folk art, San Diego history and natural history. The country's first IMAX theater is here as well as an interactive science center, which fascinates all ages. There is so much to do in San Diego that you may want to consider extending your stay to take advantage of it all. Since San Diego is fairly spread out, with limited public transportation, plan to rent a car or take cabs to most places.

October is one of the most beautiful months in southern California, with daytime temperatures in the 70s or higher. Dress for most activities in San Diego is casual, and a light jacket or sweater is all that is needed for the cooler nights. Do not worry about the rain, since in October rain is very uncommon.

The Committee on Local Arrangements has selected a variety of social activities designed to offer you the best that San Diego has to offer. The 1997 ASA Annual Meeting promises to be a fun and relaxing time for you and your family, and we look forward to welcoming you for the ASA's first visit to this special city.
