How Would YOU Like to Promote Doctors Day 1998? Focus to be on how doctors care for pediatric patients

Margaret G. Pratila, M.D., Chair
Committee on Communications

Beginning with the 150th anniversary of Dr. Crawford Long's use of ether for anesthesia, ASA joined in the national observance of Doctors Day in 1992, and each year since, has prepared materials to help its members promote the event on March 30 at their institutions.

For next year, we would like your input, ideas and participation!

The annual Doctors Day project, under the oversight of the Committee on Communications, has attempted to shine a favorable light on all doctors, not just anesthesiologists. The project was designed keeping in mind that: 1) ASA did not start Doctors Day; 2) ASA does not wish to overshadow the traditional observances as celebrated by the state medical alliances who have supported this event since its inception; and 3) ASA does not wish to alienate other doctors with its promotion.

Since 1993, the committee has focused each year on a theme of "Doctors Care." In recent years, the promotions have been targeted toward a certain patient audience such as geriatrics or obstetrics.

For the poster each year, the committee looks for a nonthreatening, nonbiased way to underline our message. A teddy bear was used in recent years because it is not ethnic-specific, gender-specific or even age-oriented. This has allowed for the posters to be distributed to a wide audience, from schools to hospital settings, other specialty societies, state medical societies and alliances, the media and individuals on request.

The Committee on Communications thrives on new ideas and is inviting ASA members to provide ideas or even original artwork for the 1998 Doctors Day poster and related promotional materials.

The focus for 1998 will be on how "doctors care" for pediatric patients. If you or a member of your family has artistic talents, please submit a drawing, painting, photograph, cartoon or other art media that epitomizes doctors caring for their youngest patients.

The deadline for submissions is September 1, 1997. Your submissions will be reviewed by the Committee on Communications, and the selected artwork will be announced immediately following the ASA Annual Meeting in October. Original artwork will be returned to members, and the winner will be given appropriate recognition and acknowledgments in the 1998 Doctors Day materials. If you have any questions, please contact the ASA Communications Department at (847) 825-5586 or by e-mail <communications@ASAhq.org>.
