| ASA Art Exhibit:
'The Mother and Child' as Seen by the Artist |
Mark S. Schreiner, M.D., Chair
Committee on Art Exhibits
"Mother is the name for God
in the lips and hearts of
children ..." W.M. Thackery
The ASA Art Exhibit is a quiet haven amidst the bustle of refresher
courses and scientific presentations and the chaos of the exhibit
floor. The Art Exhibit showcases the talents of the ASA membership
and their families and demonstrates that our lives extend beyond
the narrow bounds of the hospital and operating room. Every year,
this impressive display celebrates the creativity hidden in our
midst.
The Committee on Art Exhibits encourages the members of the ASA
and their families to participate in what should be an outstanding
exhibit. ASA members, their spouses and their children 18 years
of age or younger who wish to enter their works of art in the
junior category may obtain an application form from the ASA Executive
Office by writing to Mark S. Schreiner, M.D., Chair, Committee
on Art Exhibits, ASA, 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL
60068-2573.
Entries in the literature category were to be received by July
1 in order for the judging to be completed in advance of the meeting.
Entries received by June 1 will be listed in the ASA Art Exhibit
section of the Annual Meeting program book. All works of art that
arrive prior to the deadline on Saturday morning, October 18,
will be displayed, judged and listed in a program distributed
in the Art Exhibit area. In addition, participants will be invited
to the opening of the exhibit on Sunday evening.
1997 marks the sesquicentennial of the first obstetric anesthetic.
Paralleling this historic event, the Committee on Art Exhibits
has chosen "The Mother and Child" as the theme for the
1997 ASA Art Exhibit in San Diego. Artists throughout history
have found "The Mother and Child" to be a rich and rewarding
subject. Whether viewed from a historical, religious or purely
personal perspective, this relationship holds special meaning
for all. Childhood holds out a promise for the future, and motherhood
connotes the nurturing and support that makes that future possible.
The Committee on Art Exhibits is looking forward to seeing how
the membership's artistic insights are expressed in a wide variety
of media.
Works in all media that apply to the theme "The Mother and
Child," will be displayed and judged together. In addition,
original works may be submitted on a theme of the artist's choosing
in a wide variety of media including: oil painting, watercolor,
graphic works on paper (drawings, prints and pastels), color photography,
black and white photography, crafts (jewelry, needlework, weaving,
pottery, etc.), sculpture and literature. Each medium will be
professionally judged and award winners will receive ribbons.
Entries in media other than those listed may be displayed if arrangements
are made with the Art Committee in advance but these entries will
not usually be included in the judging. All participants will
receive certificates of appreciation.
The Art Exhibit will be located in a well-marked area of the
San Diego Convention Center exhibit hall. The Art Exhibit will
be open from 12 noon on Sunday, October 19, until 4 p.m. on Tuesday,
October 21. Exhibitors should preferably have their works in the
exhibit area by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 17. Works cannot
be accepted after 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 18. Hand delivery
of artwork is preferred. Members may wish to ship their work by
parcel post or one of the private parcel services to ensure timely
arrival of entries. Artwork will be unpacked and registered on
Friday, October 17, and the show will be hung and judged on Saturday,
October 18.
Nicole Vitalich, Education Coordinator for the San Diego Art
Museum, will head a panel of judges that will jury the show. Assisting
Ms. Vitalich will be Stephani Juno, who is both a professional
artist and a teacher at the San Diego Art Museum. The literature
category will again be judged by Marijane Osborn, Ph.D., Professor
of English at the University of California-Davis, Sacramento,
California. Traditionally, the judges have provided insightful
comments, which have been attached to the winning entries.
The Best of Show award was renamed the "Joyce P. Sumner
Best of Show Award" in 1996. The first recipient was Anne
E. Dickson, M.D., for her photograph titled "Tatoo Parlour
in Santiago." The award is named after Dr. Sumner, who inaugurated
the first ASA Art Exhibit in 1967 and chaired the Art Exhibit
Committee from 1967 to 1969.
The judges, however, will not be the final arbiters of good taste.
That honor lies with the ASA membership. The Committee on Art
Exhibits hopes that all viewers of the exhibit will take the opportunity
to cast a ballot for their favorite entry and participate in the
selection of the "Viewers' Choice Award."
The 1997 Committee on Art Exhibits cordially invites all Annual
Meeting attendees and their guests to visit the Art Exhibit to
escape the hubbub. Come enjoy works of beauty and admire the talents
of colleagues and friends.
Mark S. Schreiner, M.D., is Associate
