1997 ASA Clinical Forum Program

Gregory K. Unruh, M.D., Chair
Committee on Clinical Forum

The Clinical Forum sessions at the 1997 ASA Annual Meeting will be held Monday through Wednesday, October 20-22, at the San Diego Convention Center. Last year's Clinical Forum presentations were informative, interactive, challenging and fun, and we believe the sessions this year will live up to that challenge.

The Clinical Forum format is designed to allow a panel of experts to delve into designed cases informally and discuss their clinical management decisions. Remember, the Clinical Forum is a chance to interact with and question the experts, and the sessions are free!

The cases to be discussed will be printed in the 1997 Annual Meeting Program book so that participants in the Clinical Forum may review and study them prior to attendance. Some of the sessions will provide expanded case summaries and outlines of the important and controversial issues for those who attend. Each Clinical Forum session is scheduled for 90 minutes, and the moderator will be keenly interested in facilitating audience discussion with the panelists.

Of special interest this year will be a multidisciplinary session on ethics, moderated by Gail A. Van Norman, M.D., investigating the topics: "Should Doctors Kill Their Patients?" and "Should Some Colleagues Be Put Out to Pasture?" Dr. Van Norman's panel includes anesthesiologists trained in ethics as well as a priest, a professor of philosophy, the circuit judge who overturned the Washington State law prohibiting physician-assisted suicide and the Senior Assistant Attorney General for the State of Washington who argued for the legality of prohibiting physician-assisted suicide before the U.S. Supreme Court. This should be dynamite!

The Committee on Clinical Forum has assembled the following panels:
