Rudolph H. de Jong, M.D., Columbia, South Carolina, was recently
notified by The Journal of the South Carolina Medical Association
that he had been chosen to receive an award for a scientific article
he authored about cancer pain.
Charles S. Bryan, M.D., Editor of The Journal, announced
that the Editorial Board voted to recognize Dr. de Jong with the
Thomas A. and Shirley W. Roe Foundation Award for the best scientific
article published in The Journal written by a practicing
physician during the years 1995-96. His paper was titled "A
Modern Tragedy: Needless Suffering With Cancer Pain."
The award, consisting of a handsome plaque and $3,000, was presented
to Dr. de Jong during an awards ceremony of the House of Delegates
at the South Carolina Medical Association Annual Meeting on Sunday,
May 4, 1997, at Charleston Place, Charleston, South Carolina.
Two Firsts for Rosemarie M. Johnson, M.D.
The Immediate Past President of the California Society of Anesthesiologists,
Rosemarie M. Johnson, M.D., has a new title. On March 24, she
was elected Vice-Speaker of the California Medical Association
(CMA) House of Delegates during the CMA's annual meeting.
The CMA is the nation's largest state medical association with
498 delegates. Dr. Johnson is the first woman and anesthesiologist
to be elected Vice-Speaker.
According to Dr. Johnson, she is very proud to be the first woman
elected to the position. "By electing me as Vice-Speaker,
the CMA delegates have demonstrated the organization's commitment
to the diversity of its membership. As an anesthesiologist, it
means we really are a part of the house of medicine. This is a
tribute to all anesthesiologists who participate in organized
medicine," she said.
Dr. Johnson is presently Chair of the Health Services Advisory
Board to the San Diego Board of Supervisors. In addition to being
actively involved with the CSA and CMA, Dr. Johnson is a member
of the ASA Committee on Professional Liability and Committee on
Physician Resources, Chair of the Committee on Local Arrangements
and a member of the ASA House of Delegates.
