How Would YOU Like Doctors Day Promoted in 1998?
Margaret G. Pratila, M.D., Chair
Committee on Communications
Beginning with the 150th anniversary of Dr. Crawford Long's use
of ether for anesthesia, ASA joined in the national observance
of Doctors Day in 1992, and each year since, has prepared materials
to help its members promote the event on March 30 at their institutions.
For next year, we would like your input, ideas and participation!
Since 1993, the committee has focused each year on a theme of
"Doctors Care." In recent years, the promotions have
been targeted toward a certain patient audience such as geriatrics
or obstetrics. The focus for 1998 will be on how "doctors
care" for pediatric patients.
The Committee on Communications is inviting ASA members to provide
ideas or even original artwork for the 1998 Doctors Day poster
and related promotional materials. If you or a member of your
family has artistic talents, please submit a drawing, painting,
photograph, cartoon or other art media that epitomizes doctors
caring for their youngest patients.
The deadline for submissions is September 1, 1997. Your
submissions will be reviewed by the Committee on Communications,
and the selected artwork will be announced immediately following
the ASA Annual Meeting in October. Original artwork will be returned
to members. If you have any questions, please contact the ASA
Communications Department at (847) 825-5586 or by e-mail <communications@ASAhq.org>.
Make Annual Meeting Housing Reservations
on ASA Web Site
For the first time, ASA Annual Meeting attendees can reserve
their hotel rooms via the Internet.
Meeting attendees can now access the ASA Web site to view detailed
maps of the San Diego area and read hotel descriptions and room
pricing information. You can then request your room(s) and place
a deposit on a major credit card. In addition, hotel status is
updated constantly on the Web site, reducing the possibility of
requesting rooms at an already full hotel.
To begin the reservation process, access the ASA Web site housing
information area or go to the ASA
home page and click "Physician Information" and
then "Meeting Information." Access the San Diego map,
click on a hotel location and browse the information about that
hotel, including an overview of the hotel's amenities.
When you are ready to reserve your room, click the link for online
registration. A green light before each hotel name means rooms
are still available; a yellow light means rooms are running out;
and red indicates a sellout. After you complete the online form,
you will receive a confirmation number immediately and know that
your hotel room has been reserved. Note that all information
will be transmitted via a secure Internet link. All reservations
will go through the International Travel Service (ITS) Housing
Bureau; the ASA Executive Office does not handle hotel reservations.
