Scientific Abstracts to Be Available on ASA and Journal Web Sites

ASA broke new ground in 1995 when it provided a searchable database of scientific abstract titles, authors and presentation times on the Internet. For the 1997 Annual Meeting, we are going one better! The full text of many of the accepted papers with search capabilities will be available through both the ASA Web site and on the journal Anesthesiology's Web site.

Authors submitting scientific papers for this year's ASA Annual Meeting were given the option of submitting their papers in electronic format in addition to the traditional format. Of the 1,139 papers accepted, approximately 30 percent were also submitted electronically. These papers will be made available electronically either through the ASA Web site at or the journal's Web site. Users will be able to search by title, author or presentation time and receive a listing of accepted papers that match the search criteria. If any of those papers were also submitted electronically, the user will be able to read the full text online.

This is just the latest advancement that ASA's Web site offers to members and the general public. Beginning in June, ASA Annual Meeting attendees became able to reserve their hotel rooms online (see July 1997 NEWSLETTER). A site search engine recently became available, allowing users to find what they are looking for more quickly on this constantly growing site. In only its first three weeks in service, the search page logged more than 1,700 "hits." The list of anesthesia-related links expands almost daily, and registration brochures for workshops and regional refresher courses, with printable registration forms, have been available since the beginning of the year.

The Web site for the journal Anesthesiology also has been enhanced. In addition to the current and recent tables of contents for the journal (including abstracts), it is now possible to search the entire MedLine contents of Anesthesiology . This database contains the citations for all articles published in the journal since 1966, along with abstracts where available. A simple search page makes it possible to find articles by author's name, year of publication or words appearing in the title, abstract or MESH-heading keyword fields. The journal also has recently implemented a form that permits the electronic submission of formal Letters to the Editor. The form for these submissions can be found under the "Other Services" button on the journal's home page. According to Editor-in-Chief Michael M. Todd, M.D., "Our goal is to electronically 'process' letters submitted in this fashion in an effort to speed response time."

ASA continues to expand its Web site in order to provide additional services to its members and to offer information about the specialty of anesthesiology to the general public. Hits on the ASA home page have been averaging between 4,000 and 5,000 per month. Comments and suggestions are always welcome from ASA members -- these are your Web sites.
