Societies Offer Significant Support to FAER |
The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) acknowledges
and thanks the ASA component societies for their ongoing investment
in FAER. These dollars have been used to increase the endowment
fund, which will eventually become a major source of support for
the Foundation.
The current plan of the FAER Board of Directors is to use support
from ASA (40 percent of its annual support) with the subspecialty
societies and the corporate sponsors to provide funding for all
grant recipients. This allows the component societies' support,
individual contributions and the remaining 60 percent of ASA's
funding to be added to the endowment.
The Foundation appreciates that the component societies have
multiple demands for limited resources, but FAER is firmly convinced
that its programs ultimately benefit all states and anesthesiologists.
The FAER office tries to keep the state component society officers
aware of its activities and sends them announcements, project
summaries and final reports of the FAER award recipients from
their respective states.
Several state societies, including the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists,
honor deceased colleagues by memorializing them through FAER.
The Foundation responds by thanking the state as well as by writing
and acknowledging the honor to the living spouse of the deceased.
This year, the contribution from the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists
was in recognition of a physician whom the society deemed worthy
of special mention.
We would ask states without a residency training program to consider
supporting FAER. Each state is the beneficiary of practicing anesthesiologists
trained in programs from around the country. The bylaws of most
state societies speak to the advancement of the science of anesthesiology.
Investment in FAER serves that objective, impacts the practice
over time and, ultimately, results in improvement in patient care.
Many component societies have contributed to FAER annually, and
this year, four societies renewed their contributions and others
made their first contribution to FAER. We welcome suggestions
on developing stronger relationships with these societies. Their
support over the years has been significant, and we hope the component
society gifts this year will be above the level achieved in 1996.
The following state components are recognized for their commitment
to a 1997 gift to FAER. There are a number of additional component
societies that will be considering support for FAER during their
fall meetings.

Survey of Former ASA and FAER Award Recipients
We are very happy to announce that the results of the survey
of former ASA and FAER award recipients were accepted for publication
in the journal Anesthesiology. The manuscript prepared
by Cynthia P. King, M.Ed., M.S., and Carl C. Hug, Jr., M.D., Ph.D.,
documents the academic careers and research funding of award recipients.
The survey summarizes the experience of these anesthesiologists
over the last two decades and will be published in Anesthesiology
around the first of the year.
Grant Applications
FAER received 14 Clinical Research Starter Grant applications
by its first deadline of July 31. While this is an encouraging
response for a new program, the total number of applications for
1997 appears to be down slightly from the prior two years. We
hope this decrease does not represent a reduction in scientific
efforts in the academic departments and would invite interested
applicants to look ahead to the December 1 deadline.
