Welcome to Orlando!
ASA Annual Meeting Social Activities Program

Jimmie D. Moore, M.D., Chair
Committee on Local Arrangements

Orlando, the home of world-famous theme parks and nonstop entertainment, awaits your arrival this fall for the ASA Annual Meeting on October 17-21, 1998. With such a wide variety of activities and sites, Orlando offers a new experience with each visit.

Several tours have been scheduled to provide ASA guests with great ways to become familiarized with all there is to see and do in Orlando. Shop-aholics will find plenty to keep themselves busy. The "Winter Park/Park Avenue Shopping Tour" offers a boat ride through the unique waterway of Winter Park, with shopping in exclusive boutiques and a chance to see the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which features the largest collection of Louis B. Tiffany glass in the world. If you are looking for a little bit of yesteryear, a day spent in Mount Dora will provide antique shopping in specialty shops and boutiques and a look at many historic buildings from the 19th century.

Looking for a relaxing way to spend a few hours? The Rivership Cruise on the St. John's River is a great idea for grabbing a bite to eat and viewing the river's inhabitants, from water skiers and fisherman to manatees and alligators. If that doesn't provide you with a glimpse of a Florida alligator, perhaps one or two might surface during the "Airboat Adventure With Lunch." You will travel down the Withlacooche River and see the many elements of nature that make up the unique fauna and flora of Central Florida.

A visit to Orlando simply would not be complete without stopping by some of Orlando's famous theme parks. Sea World will give ASA guests a behind-the-scenes look at some of its inhabitants, particularly the polar bears and penguins. You will also have a chance to see Shamu and jet past mammoth glaciers, beluga whales and walruses on the "Wild Arctic" tour.

Another famous theme park, Cypress Gardens, provides more than 200 acres of botanical splendor. With 8,000 varieties of plants and flowers from more than 90 countries, you will be amazed at the beauty of this spectacular theme park. The "must-see" Cypress Gardens Water Show and the "Wings of Wonder" Butterfly Conservatory are two stops you will want to make while touring this magnificent park.

If that isn't enough to keep you busy, perhaps a visit to the Kennedy Space Center will give you a "boost." You will visit the refurbished 363-foot-tall Saturn V moon rocket and embark on a bus tour that allows you to view the shuttle assembly building, actual launch pads and rocket museums. You will also see a breathtaking film on a five-story IMAX screen.

The ASA Social Activities Program will again offer many educational seminars that should be of interest to members and their spouses. Barry Rubenstein, B.S., J.D., LL.M., will provide information on "Effective Retirement Plans and Estate Strategies," and J. Michael Moody will lead a program titled "Effective Investment Strategies." Both seminars will help you in identifying the advantages and disadvantages and assessing the risks and rewards of numerous investments and planning strategies. "How to Get Accepted to the College of Your Choice," again presented by Diane E. Epstein, has helped thousands of students and their parents focus on strategies when looking into college admission processes.

If you are looking to collect some memories from this year's Annual Meeting, "Where Are Your Family Photos?" is a program you will not want to miss. Creative Memories instructors Char Coan, Teri Lee and Susan Nalley will present methods to help you organize your photos and store your negatives. They will also teach you creative ways to produce beautiful family photo albums that you can share with your family for years to come.

"In the Sandwich Generation" will help you deal with the pressures involved in being both a caregiver for aging or ill parents and your own children at home. Another program, "Dealing With Stress Through Humor" will look at the everyday stresses of life and help you find ways to deal with them and incorporate some laughter in the process.

For further information on how to take advantage of these exciting opportunities, look for the Social Activities Program booklet that will be included with the ASA Annual Meeting registration materials. Please share the information with your spouse and make plans to take advantage of this year's programs before they are sold out.
