Meeting Highlights |
It only took a little sunshine and warm weather blended with
the world's largest scientific meeting for anesthesiologists to
draw an attendance of 16,385 ASA members, guests, spouses and
exhibitors to this year's Annual Meeting held from October 17-21,
1998, in Orlando, Florida.
Highlights of the 1998 ASA Annual Meeting included the installation
of ASA President John B. Neeld, Jr., M.D., of Atlanta,
Georgia. Dr. Neeld has served as President-Elect (1998), First
Vice-President (1997), Treasurer (1994-96), Assistant Treasurer
(1991-93) and as an ASA Delegate (1982-91). Dr. Neeld is Chair
of the Department of Anesthesiology at Northside Hospital and
Northside Anesthesiology Consultants, Atlanta, Georgia.
Election of Officers
Ronald A. MacKenzie, D.O., was installed as President-Elect.
Dr. MacKenzie has served ASA as First Vice-President (1998), Secretary
(1991-97), Assistant Secretary (1987-91), Delegate (1981-83) and
District Director (1983-87). He is Vice-Chair and Consultant for
the Department of Anesthesiology at Mayo Medical School, Rochester,
Minnesota.
Neil Swissman, M.D., was elected as First Vice-President.
Dr. Swissman served as Treasurer (1997-98), Assistant Treasurer
(1994-96), Delegate (1983-87), District Director (1988-89) and
Alternate Director (1987-88; 1991-93). Dr. Swissman is in private
practice in Las Vegas, Nevada.
James E. Cottrell, M.D., was re-elected as Vice-President
for Scientific Affairs. Dr. Cottrell has served as Chair of four
committees and as a member of several others. Dr. Cottrell is
Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Senior
Associate Dean at State University of New York Health Science
Center at Brooklyn, New York. He is Regional Chair of the Department
of Anesthesiology at Long Island College Hospital, Chief of Anesthesiology
at Kings County Hospital Center and Consultant to the Department
of Anesthesiology, Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Brooklyn,
New York.
Joanne Jene, M.D., Staff Anesthesiologist at Legacy Emanuel
Hospital and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Oregon Health
Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, will continue as Secretary.
Dr. Jene served as Assistant Secretary (1994-97), District Director
(1985-94) and as a member of the Quality Improvement and Practice
Management, Governmental Affairs, Acute Medicine and Ambulatory
Surgical Care committees.
Marcelle M. Willock, M.D., was re-elected as Assistant
Secretary. Dr. Willock has served ASA as a District Director (1994-97),
Delegate (1986-88) and as Chair of the Committee on Surgical Anesthesia,
an Annual Meeting Reference Committee and the Board of Directors
Finance Committee. She has also been a member of several ASA committees.
She is Assistant Provost for External Affairs, Boston University
Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts.
Orin F. Guidry, M.D., filled the position of Treasurer
vacated by Dr. Swissman when he assumed the office of First Vice-President.
Dr. Guidry served as Assistant Treasurer (1996-98), District Director
(1992-96) and as former Chair of the committees on Governmental
Affairs, Legislative Review and Surgical Anesthesia. Dr. Guidry
is a private practitioner and Clinical Assistant Professor of
Anesthesiology, University of Mississippi School of Medicine,
Jackson, Mississippi.
Roger A. Moore, M.D., was elected as Assistant Treasurer.
He has served on several committees, and is Chair of the Department
of Anesthesiology, Attending Anesthesiologist and Director of
Pediatric Anesthesia, Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills,
New Jersey.
Barry M. Glazer, M.D., continues his term as Speaker
of the House of Delegates (1995-present). Dr. Glazer previously
served as Vice-Speaker of the House of Delegates (1991-94), Alternate
Director (1987-91) and Delegate (1980-91). He is Staff Anesthesiologist
and former Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, St. Francis
Hospital Center, Beech Grove, Indiana.
Eugene P. Sinclair, M.D., continues as Vice-Speaker of
the House of Delegates (1995-present). Dr. Sinclair has served
as an Alternate District Director (1984-86) and as a District
Director (1987-94). He is Staff Anesthesiologist at Columbia Hospital
and Columbia Musculoskeletal Institute, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Awards and Honors
James F. Arens, M.D., received the 1997 ASA Distinguished
Service Award. Dr. Arens is Vice President for Clinical Affairs,
Chief Executive Officer and Professor of Anesthesiology at the
University of Texas Medical Branch Hospitals, Galveston, Texas.
Harry H. Bird, M.D., was named the recipient of the 1998
Distinguished Service Award. A long-time practicing anesthesiologist
in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dr. Bird, now retired, is a past ASA
President (1988).
The 13th ASA Award for Excellence in Research was presented
to Gary Strichartz, Ph.D. Dr. Strichartz is Professor of
Anesthesia (Pharmacology) at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard
Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.
The Emery A. Rovenstine Memorial Lecture was delivered by Francis
M. James III, M.D. Dr. James is Professor and Chair of the
Department of Anesthesiology, Bowman Gray School of Medicine,
Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His lecture
was titled "Who Will Lead Us?"
The first-place Scientific and Educational Exhibit, titled "The
Evolution of the Anesthesia Machine," was submitted by Rafael
A. Ortega, M.D., and Harold M. Arkoff, M.D., Boston
University Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts.
Exceptional Merit Awards were presented to the following exhibits:
*"Peripheral Nerve Blocks in Ambulatory Anesthesia Practice.
What Can We Offer in the Next Century?" submitted by Jerry
D. Vloka, M.D., and Admir Hadzic, M.D., St. Luke's-Roosevelt
Hospital Center, Columbia University College of Physicians and
Surgeons, New York, New York.
*"Laryngeal Mask Airway: Its Contribution to Anesthesia Practice
and Airway Management," submitted by Andranik Ovassapian, M.D.,
Stephen F. Dierdorf, M.D., David Z. Ferson, M.D., Maya S. Suresh,
M.D., and William H. Rosenblatt, M.D., Northwestern
University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois.
*"Integrating Personal Computing Resources in an Anesthesiology
Training Program," submitted by the faculty and residents of
the Department of Anesthesia, Indiana University School of Medicine,
Indianapolis, Indiana.
The 1998 ASA Media Award was presented to Denise Grady
of the New York Times for her article "A Child's Pain"
in Time magazine's fall 1997 special issue, "Heroes of
Medicine," and to Lyn Brown, WNYW-TV, for her news report
"Patient Safety in the Doctor's Office" on December 30, 1997.
