American Society of Anesthesiologists Strategic Plan: 1999-2001


Vision

The American Society of Anesthesiologists is dedicated to the interests of patients and ASA members in all aspects of the practice of anesthesiology.

Mission

ASA is the organization of physician specialists in anesthesiology representing professionals providing ethical anesthesia care. ASA serves patients, the public, physicians and other professionals who deliver such care by defining and advancing the standard of anesthesia care and supporting the practice of anesthesiology.

Goals
  1. Continue to provide education to members and improve public education as it relates to anesthesiology.
  2. Create the mechanisms to support practice management programs, improve communications and marketing of the specialty and identify and promote professional opportunities.
  3. Advocate for the needs of patients, the public, and ASA members with state and federal governmental entities, third-party payers, consumer groups and other professional organizations.
  4. Support or conduct research to foster optimal patient care and advancement of the specialty.
  5. Create an efficient and effective governance and administrative system that supports member services, information needs and future planning.
Three-Year Objectives: 1999-2001
Goal 1:
Continue to provide education to members and improve public education as it relates to anesthesiology.
  1. Expand and improve educational opportunities to members.
  2. Promote the use of technology (e.g., Internet, CD-ROM, video and audiotapes, simulators and chat rooms with experts) to increase availability of scientific and practice management information.
  3. Determine opportunities
    for increased member and spokesperson interface with the public.
  4. Identify areas of public interest for the specialty of anesthesiology.
Goal 2:
Create the mechanisms to support practice managment programs, improve communications and marketing of the specialty, and identify and promote professional opportuties.
  1. Increase practice management educational activities.
  2. Develop internal practice management and clinical databases.
  3. Develop educational programs to support expanded clinical and administrative roles for anesthesiologists.
  4. Evaluate the potential role of ASA in collective bargaining.
  5. Develop a mechanism for credentialing and criteria for privileging.
  6. Increase efforts in proactive media public relations activities.
  7. Enhance the communication network within the specialty.
  8. Promote administrative and clinical professional opportunities.
  9. Identify and promote leadership potential within the specialty.
  10. Focus the responsibility for member services in the infrastructure and governance of the Society.
Goal 3:
Advocate for the needs of patients, the public and ASA members with state and federal governmental entities, third-party payers, consumer groups and other professional organizations.
  1. Advocate that an anesthesiologist participate in every anesthetic administered in the United States.
  2. Establish physician continuity in ASA's relationship with state and federal government agencies.
  3. Endeavor to improve relationships with nonphysician anesthesia personnel.
  4. Educate other physicians of the importance of the anesthesiologist to optimal patient care.
  5. Encourage participation in medical staff and medical community activities.
  6. Educate third-party payers, consumer groups and governmental agencies of the value of the anesthesiologist in optimal patient care.
  7. Promote the involvement of anesthesiologists in public health issues and physician well-being.
  8. Advocate for moral and ethical practice of medicine and anesthesiology.
Goal 4:
Support or conduct research to foster optimal patient care and advancement of the specialty.
  1. Promote the financial viability of the Society's three foundations.
  2. Encourage the dissemination of clinically relevant research.
  3. Assure adequate facilities for research presentations at the Annual Meeting.
  4. Foster "outcomes research" projects.
  5. Encourage research in administrative and management issues important to anesthesiologists.
Goal 5:
Create an efficient and effective governance and administrative system that supports member services, information needs and future planning.
  1. Annually review and update ASA's strategic plan.
  2. Create a plan by July 1, 1999, to facilitate and streamline decision-making by the elected leadership.
  3. Review the efficiency and appropriateness of the organization's committee structure and appointment process.
  4. Require that operational entities (e.g., sections, committees, and councils) be charged with specific, goal-oriented tasks which must be consistent with the strategic plan, and must be accomplished within finite time periods.
  5. Facilitate the achievement of electronic communications by a majority of members by the year 2000.
  6. Devote adequate resources to assess and respond to data information needs of the membership and continually strive to meet the goals and objectives of the strategic plan.
