Refresher Course Set in Denver

"Assessing the Difficult Airway - Can You Predict a Problem?" and "Clinical Monitoring of the Brain and Spinal Cord" are among the lectures to be presented at the ASA Regional Refresher Course on Issues and Innovations in the Management of Neurosurgical and Orthopedic Patients. The program will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 17-18, 1999, at the Westin Hotel Tabor Center in downtown Denver.

The topics and speakers highlight current controversial areas of neurosurgical and orthopedic anesthesia practice. The use of regional techniques for these procedures is emphasized.

The program chair is Patricia H. Petrozza, M.D. Dr. Petrozza will speak on "Management of the Patient With Spinal Cord Injury." Other faculty and their topics are:

  • Donald S. Prough, M.D., "Management of Head Trauma" and "Fluid Management in Neurosurgical Cases and Trauma";
  • James T. Roberts, M.D., "Fiberoptic Intubation and Alternative Techniques for Managing the Difficult Airway" and "Assessing the Difficult Airway - Can You Predict a Problem?";
  • Satwant K. Samra, M.D., "Cerebral Oximetry: Applications and Controversies";
  • Tod B. Sloan, M.D., Ph.D., "Anesthetics and Intracranial Dynamics: Does the Agent Matter?" and "Clinical Monitoring of the Brain and Spinal Cord";
  • Denise J. Wedel, M.D., "Neurological complications of Spinal and Epidural Anesthesia" and "Upper Extremity Blocks - Making Them Work in a Busy Practice."

ASA is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education programs for physicians.

ASA designates this continuing medical education program for 14 credit hours in category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

Registration is suggested by June 15, 1999. Registration fees are $250 for ASA active members, $125 for resident members and $600 for nonmembers. The course lecture book is an additional $25. Meeting registrants will be able to download the abstracts from ASA's Web site two weeks before the meeting at no charge. Abstracts will also be available on diskette for $15.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Westin Hotel Tabor Center Denver. A room reservation form will be sent upon registration for the meeting. Reservations should be made directly with the hotel by June 26, 1999.



1999 RVG and CROSSWALK™Available in Print and on Disk

The 1999 ASA Relative Value Guide (RVG) has been published and is available from the ASA Executive Office for $15 per copy.

In addition to the booklet format, the RVG can be obtained on disk (for both DOS- and Macintosh-based systems). It is in ASCII format, ready for use with any software program that imports ASCII files. The cost for the electronic version is $100 for members and $125 for nonmembers, which includes a copy of the printed version. Check with your data processing professional to ensure compatibility with your software.

Included in the 1999 RVG are changes in terminology and Current Procedural Terminology Fourth Edition (CPT-4) codes approved by the ASA House of Delegates at the 1998 ASA Annual Meeting. Additionally, the RVG contains changes in code numbers and descriptors approved by the American Medical Association CPT-4 Editorial Panel.

The 1999 CROSSWALK™ document, which relates current procedural terminology between surgical and anesthesia codes, is available from the ASA Executive Office. The CROSSWALK™ document may be purchased at the price of $75 for a hard copy or on a computer diskette for $150 ($250 for nonmembers), which includes a hard copy.

Those purchasing the 1999 edition CROSSWALK™ should keep in mind that it is entirely unofficial, representing only the collective best judgment of members of the ASA Committee on Economics, and that these members' judgment may not necessarily be accepted by Medicare or other payers.



AMA Meeting to Include Issues for Section Council

Officials from the Society's Section Council on Anesthesiology of the American Medical Association (AMA) would like to know the names of those ASA members planning to attend the AMA's House of Delegates on June 20-24, 1999, in Chicago, Illinois.

The Section Council is open to all anesthesiologists who attend the AMA House of Delegates meeting. The Section Council meets to discuss resolutions and other issues of importance to anesthesiologists. Meetings usually take place on Saturday and Monday of the AMA House of Delegates meeting. If you are attending the House of Delegates meeting, the Society would welcome your participation.
