ASA at a Glance

The following figures were compiled by ASA staff from available membership data as of April 1999. Percentages reflect just less than 1 percent of unaccountable data due to individual member records with insufficient information.

The ASA demographics survey is mailed annually to members based on their month of birth or when a change in their practice occurs (change of address, membership status, etc.) The survey requests information about the member's mode of practice, years in practice, age, gender, etc.

Total ASA Membership = 35,547

Membership by Age

The greatest number of ASA members (37.1 percent) are between the ages of 35-44. The second largest group (25.8 percent) includes ages 45-54

Membership Status

Active members make up the largest segment (67 percent) of ASA's total membership with resident members comprising about 12 percent.

Primary Modes of Practice

These figures represent 86 percent of ASA active members who have returned physician demographic surveys and do not include residents who cannot stipulate practice affiliations. While the percentages may not reflect the entire ASA membership, they are indicative of the current trend toward private group practice.

Membership by Gender

The number of female anesthesiologists has been increasing at a slow but steady rate of about 1 percent every two years, according to ASA data.
