FAER REPORT
FAER Urges States to Unite for 100 Percent Participation

We extend great thanks and appreciation to component societies for their support of FAER. Component society contributions have been an increasingly significant resource for the FAER endowment. We hope every state believes, as we do, that they all benefit from the advancements made by the FAER award recipients. Our goal for next year is to have 100 percent participation, and we ask help from all of you to encourage your component society to contribute and be advocates for FAER.

1999 Contributions

As of mid-December 1999, FAER had received $70,181 from 35 ASA component societies. The societies have more than doubled their contributions since 1995 when 18 component societies gave $34,200. The top 1999 contributor was Minnesota ($8,900), with Florida ($6,220) and Texas ($6,125) coming in second and third. California and Pennsylvania gave gifts of $5,000 and Tennessee $4,610. The contributions from these six component societies made up 51 percent of the 1999 total. The total 1999 society contributions currently would support two or three FAER award investigators.

1999 Per-Active-Member Contributions by State

Minnesota topped the charts with a per-active-member contribution of $25.80. Tennessee and Iowa followed with $10 per member and $9.91 per member, respectively. Nebraska ($6.75), Rhode Island ($6.58) and Connecticut ($5.41) followed, with Missouri, Georgia, Florida and South Dakota all giving about $5 per member. We appreciate and recognize these societies' contributions. A number of the societies gave generously despite not being direct recipients of FAER awards.

1988-1999 Cumulative Contributions by State

Component societies have been supporting FAER since 1988. Florida receives top honors for cumulative contributions of $62,220, followed by California ($55,000) and Pennsylvania ($51,500). Together, five societies, Florida, California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Minnesota contributed 52 percent of the $480,916 given to FAER since 1988 by component societies.

1999 Individual Contributions by State

Individuals from each state also contribute to FAER. At the time of submission of this article in mid-December 1999, 302 individual gifts from 37 states, the District of Columbia and Canada totaled $90,969 (up from $45,000 in 1996). This represents participation by a little over 1 percent of the ASA active membership. We hope to increase this percentage annually. California, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Minnesota each had more than 15 individuals donate personal gifts. Minnesota, Massachusetts, Missouri and Connecticut recorded the highest percentage of members contributing with 5.2 percent, 2.6 percent, 2.4 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively. This money currently would be enough to support three or four FAER investigators.

It is encouraging and refreshing to see the gradual increase in support of FAER and the specialty by anesthesiologists. We cannot take the scientific foundation of anesthesiology for granted. All of us at FAER give you our great thanks and appreciation.
