Residents Prove That Our Speciality Is Going Strong

Thomas B. Bralliar, M.D., Chair
Committee on Residents and Medical Students

One of the most pleasant duties of the Committee on Residents and Medical Students is to be the liaison with the ASA Resident Component chair and to serve as a conduit for the recommendations of the Resident Component Governing Council to the House of Delegates. As a result, I have had close interactions with past Resident Component Chairs Scott E. Metzger, M.D., Ann C. Still, M.D., and Stephen J. Kimatian, M.D., their current Chair Roy G. Soto, M.D., and their Chair-Elect, Tripti C. Kataria, M.D.

I have witnessed the enthusiasm, idealism and zeal that they and their members have for anesthesiology. They are bright, hard-working professionals who constantly reach out to medical students. In recent years, they have developed a resident luncheon program, a resident "key contact" in every program, an ASA booth at the annual meeting of the American Medical Students Association (AMSA) and a basic airway management program at this year's annual meeting of AMSA in March in Washington, D.C. Their members have actively participated in political activities within ASA, their own state components and the annual ASA Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Increasing membership in ASA and improving communication through their own Web site are ongoing projects.

Residents have a greater stake in the future of anesthesiology than we do. But I have seen their leadership and commitment through the Resident Component, and their future looks bright indeed. You will find their issues outlined in the following articles to be interesting and informative.

Thomas B. Bralliar, M.D., is Staff Anesthesiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. He is also District 11 Director (Ohio).
