RESIDENTS' REVIEW

Call for a New Residents' Review Editor

Jack Cooley, M.D.
Interim Editor, Residents' Review

Unfortunately, one of my first duties after being appointed Interim Editor for the "Residents' Review" section of the ASA NEWSLETTER is to call for applications for a new editor beginning in March 2001. The term of office is two years, and the chair of the Resident Component Governing Council, now chair-elect, will appoint the position after the ASA Annual Meeting in October 2000.

ASA has made a strong commitment to encourage resident involvement in ASA, and the "Residents' Review" section of the NEWSLETTER is an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns, ideas and suggestions to the greater community of anesthesiologists. The editor position is an excellent platform by which a resident with two years remaining in training can influence resident involvement in ASA.

The editor is responsible for solicitation of authors for appropriate articles for the "Residents' Review" column, editing the submissions, collecting the applicable author information and forwarding the submission to the ASA NEWSLETTER in a timely manner. Additionally, the editor is accountable for several articles during the year, such as this one, and has the option of authoring other articles as well. Finally, the editor must compile the residents' issue in March 2002. (See past April issues of the ASA NEWSLETTER for examples of this biennial activity.) The editor also attends the meetings of the Resident Component Governing Council at the semi-annual meetings of the Board of Directors in Chicago, Illinois.

Residents interested in the editorship should send their application to the ASA Executive Office by September 1, 2000. Applications should include a cover letter describing the resident's interest in the position, a current curriculum vitae and the name and address of the resident's training program director. Prior editorial or writing experience is preferred, but not required.

The ASA Executive Office must receive applications by September 1, 2000, and the chair will appoint the editor after the Annual Meeting in October. The address for mailing is: Ronald A. Bruns, Director of Administrative Affairs, ASA Executive Office, 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573.

Please feel free to contact Roy G. Soto, M.D., chair of the Resident Component Governing Council, or me for more information concerning the position.

Good luck to all applicants.

Erratum

In the April ASA NEWSLETTER ("A Survey of Residency Programs' Didactics"), it was erroneously reported that Fran Thayer, M.D., was a resident at the University of California-Los Angeles. She is in fact a resident at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. Our sincere apologies to Dr. Thayer.

John A. "Jack" Cooley, M.D., is an anesthesiology resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.
