Personnel Changes Across the Board: New Board Members,
Part 3
At its August meeting, the ASA Board of Directors
confirmed the appointments of nine new directors to
the Foundation for Anesthesia Research and Education
Board of Directors with terms beginning in October
2002. Following are the final three directors (see
the October
and November
2002 Newsletters for the previous six).
M. Christine Stock, M.D., Northwestern University,
Chicago, Illinois
Since October 2000, M. Christine Stock, M.D. has
served the Anesthesiology Department at Northwestern
University’s Feinberg School of Medicine as
the James E. Eckenhoff Professor and Chair.
She graduated from Northwestern’s medical school,
completed a clinical research fellowship with John
Downs, M.D., then returned to Northwestern for anesthesiology
residency. During her CCM Fellowship, she rejoined
Dr. Downs as his laboratory research fellow.
Dr. Stock joined Emory’s anesthesiology faculty
in 1985. Her laboratory studied O2 delivery and the
work of breathing, and she engaged in clinical studies,
including APRV’s development. At Emory, she
served as SICU Medical Director at Grady Hospital,
Clinical Director of the Emory University Hospital
(EUH) operating rooms, and Chief of Anesthesiology
Services at EUH.
Dr. Stock is a past president of the American Society
of Critical Care Anesthesiologists and the Association
of Anesthesia Clinical Directors. Her textbook Handbook
of Mechanical Ventilatory Support has been translated
into three languages.
Denham S. Ward, Ph.D., M.D., University
of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester,
New York
Denham S. Ward, Ph.D., M.D., is Professor of Anesthesiology
and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rochester.
He earned his Ph.D. in Systems Science from the University
of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1975. During graduate
work at UCLA, he became involved with respiratory
research in the department of anesthesiology, which
led to an interest in medicine. In 1977, he received
his M.D. from the University of Miami. Following an
internal medicine internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital,
Miami, he returned to UCLA for anesthesiology residency.
After joining the UCLA faculty, his interest in ventilatory
control continued, and he also became anesthesiology
residency program director. In 1992, he became professor
and chair of anesthesiology at the University of Rochester.
He has been active in the Society for Education in
Anesthesia and the Association of University Anesthesiologists
and was president of the Association of Anesthesiology
Program Directors, representing that organization
at the Association of American Medical Colleges Council
of Academic Societies. He also has chaired the ASA
Committee on Problem-Based Learning Discussions.
James R. Zaidan, M.D., Emory University
School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia
James R. Zaidan, M.D., received his medical degree
from West Virginia University School of Medicine.
After completing his surgical internship at Allegheny
General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr.
Zaidan entered anesthesiology training at Massachusetts
General Hospital in Boston where he also completed
a year of fellowship training in cardiac anesthesiology.
He served a tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Germany
after which he and his family moved to Atlanta.
Dr. Zaidan has been a faculty member of Emory University
School of Medicine for 25 years. During that time,
he has served as Deputy Chair for Education and Chief
of Service at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University
Hospital. Dr. Zaidan received his M.B.A. degree from
Emory University Goizueta Business School in 1998.
He is a senior associate examiner for the American
Board of Anesthesiology. In 2000, Dr. Zaidan assumed
the duties of Associate Dean for Graduate Medical
Education, Emory University School of Medicine. He
became Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in
2001.
