A Call for Residents to Serve
on ASA Committees
Bracken J.
De Witt, M.D., Ph.D., Chair
ASA Resident Component Governing Council
As the newly appointed residents to ASA committees
begin their term, it is time to prepare for next October
and send a call to all residents who are interested
in serving on ASA committees.
Resident participation occurs at nearly all levels
of ASA, and these positions are both coveted and educational.
These positions allow resident exposure to ASA committee
functions while simultaneously giving ASA leadership
exposure to the high-quality of residents this country
produces. Resident participation in the recent ASA
Resident Component House of Delegates was outstanding.
Because of this participation, I anticipate a continued
demand for committee nominations.
All applications should consist of a cover letter
explaining the resident’s desire to serve on
a specific committee. This letter should include a
statement that each applicant will submit a written
report to the ASA Resident Component Governing Council
following each committee meeting and a statement that
the training program of the resident is aware of and
supports the resident application. Please include
a curriculum vitae/resumé with contact information
and e-mail address plus a preference list of three
committees. A list of committees may be found at:
There are two types of committee appointments, regular
and adjunct. Regular members are appointed for a three-year
term, while adjunct members are appointed for a one-year
term. All resident appointments are adjunct in nature
and are therefore one year. The committee appointment
term begins at the conclusion of the next ASA Annual
Meeting, held every October. Thus, if you are currently
a CA-3, you may no longer be a resident at the time
you take your committee seat. However, committee reports
should still be sent to the Resident Component Governing
Council. The ASA President-Elect must approve all
Resident Component appointments to ASA committees.
In a change from previous years, all applications
should be sent directly to me by January 3,
2003, for committee appointment consideration:
Bracken J. DeWitt, M.D., Ph.D., Chair, ASA Resident
Component, 4715 Kings Mills Way, Owings Mills, MD
21117.
ASA is proactive and committed to getting residents
politically involved. With more than 60 standing committees
and subcommittees, resident involvement not only gives
us a voice in forging ASA policy but also allows residents
the opportunity to become familiar with committee
procedures that will only strengthen our organization
and allow residents to be better informed.
For additional information, please feel free to contact
any of the current Resident Component Governing Council
Members who can be located at:
officers.html>. Any further
questions can be forwarded to me at:
<bjdewitt@hotmail.com>.
We are the makers of our own professional future,
so do not let this unique opportunity pass you by.
It is time to get involved in your ASA!
