‘Fountain of Youths’ Art Exhibit Makes Big Splash in Orlando

Jerry J. Berger, M.D., Chair
Committee on Art Exhibits

The ASA 35th Annual Art Exhibit “Fountain of Youths” mirrored its Florida location, including a water sculpture that set the mood. This theme enabled artists and writers to focus on several topics with children and water as the pivotal subject of their entries. A great showing also was made in our junior category, as members enjoyed the opportunity to let their children experience all the attractions Orlando has to offer.

The judges braved sweltering heat in the then-unair-conditioned exhibit hall during the four-hour review process. This year’s judges were Nancy Jay, Ph.D., and Randall Smith, both experienced artists and teachers in the fine arts and photography. As chair, I also braved the same hot and humid conditions but was delighted at their exhilaration while reviewing the art. The literature entries were judged by Shelley Mickle, a prominent author and columnist. The winners in each category should be proud that their work was professionally judged and that their awards were a great accomplishment.

Next year’s theme is “Flower Power,” reflecting our San Francisco location and heralding back to the days of the 1960s when hippies and love were in the air and flowers became their symbol. This theme should allow both fine artists and photographers to enter a panoply of work. A new category for 2003 will be “computer-generated art.” I am informed that this art medium is at the forefront of the art world.

Start writing those poems and essays. Pull out the canvases, cameras and brushes, and plan on meeting in San Francisco. Flowers in the hair are optional. Peace!
