Ad Hoc Committee to Evaluate the Annual Meeting: What Do You Suggest?

Arnold J. Berry, M.D., Chair
Ad Hoc Committee on Annual Meeting Opportunities

At the recommendation of ASA President James E. Cottrell, M.D., and after approval by the 2002 House of Delegates, an Ad Hoc Committee on Annual Meeting Opportunities was created. The goal of this committee is to evaluate the structure and content of the Annual Meeting to ensure that ASA offers the most effective educational activities to meet the learning needs of all its members. The ad hoc committee also has been asked to define how to incorporate anesthesiology subspecialty societies into the planning and implementation of the Annual Meeting and to increase participation in and content relating to pain medicine and critical care medicine.

An additional goal for the restructuring of the Annual Meeting is to ensure that it fulfills any continuing medical education requirements that are included in the Maintenance of Certification program of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Appointees to the ad hoc committee include current or former officers of anesthesia subspecialty societies as well as individuals who have been involved with the planning for the Annual Meeting or other national educational programs.

The committee held its initial meeting in October 2002 and convened again in February 2003. It is anticipated that the recommendations of the ad hoc committee will be considered for implementation in the planning of the 2004 Annual Meeting.

To ensure that our deliberations fulfill the goals outlined, I am requesting input from the ASA membership. The Ad Hoc Committee on Annual Meeting Opportunities welcomes recommendations from you regarding new types of educational sessions, instructional formats and content or your ideas on any other aspect of the Annual Meeting.

Please forward recommendations for consideration to the Ad Hoc Committee on Annual Meeting Opportunities in care of the ASA Executive Office, 520 N. Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573; <mail@ASAhq.org>.
