2003 ASA Scientific Papers: Call for Abstracts
The submission procedure for the 2003 ASA Annual Meeting scientific papers is very similar to that used in 2002. ASA will once again partner with Marathon Multimedia, which specializes in online abstract submissions. The abstract submission program is accessible on ASA’s Web site <www2.asahq.org/web/index.asp> by clicking on the “2003 Scientific Papers Submission” link. All accepted abstracts will be published in their entirety in electronic format, and a summary will be published in the 2003 Annual Meeting program book. Submission instructions are available on the ASA Web site and will not be mailed to authors. It will not be necessary to request a packet of abstract submission material.

The following outlines the 2003 Scientific Papers submission process:
• Only abstracts submitted online can be considered. The deadline for submitting all abstracts is Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.
• To submit your abstract using the online submission form, you must be using Netscape® Navigator™ or Communicator™, version 4.7 or higher, or Microsoft® Internet Explorer®, version 5.0 or higher.
• All submission instructions are available on the ASA Web site and accessible from any point during the submission process. No separate submission packet will be mailed.
• Authors may input and revise submissions until the deadline or until the abstract is formally submitted by clicking the “Submit” button. Entries will be checked automatically for completeness once officially submitted. After the closing deadline, entries that are not in compliance with all of the submission requirements will be assumed to be in draft format and will not be considered by the graders.
• A brief summary of the study must be included with the submission and, for abstracts that are accepted, will be published in the 2003 Annual Meeting program book. The summary will not be considered when the abstracts are graded. The September supplement to Anesthesiology will consist of a CD-ROM containing the full text and graphics of all accepted abstracts.
• The use of scientific characters and common style elements such as bold, italic and underline will be permitted. Font specification, with some limitations, will be available.
The ASA Web site contains more complete information regarding the process for submitting abstracts.

TEE Workshop Set for May 31-June 1
The Workshop on Transesophageal Echocardiography, an introductory course on intraoperative echocardiography, will be held on May 31-June 1, 2003, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland.

This workshop introduces a number of topics that will provide the basics on the physics of ultrasound, the use of knobs on the echocardiography machine, the components of a complete transesophageal examination along with the corresponding anatomical views and the pathophysiology of valvular heart disease and its intraoperative assessment.

Robert M. Savage, M.D., the program’s co-chair, will speak on “Basic Cardiac Anatomy and Imaging Planes” as well as the corresponding workshop, “Mitral Valves and the “Valve Workshop.”
Other topics include:
• “Physics of Ultrasound,” “Artifacts and Pitfalls,” “Economics of Intraoperative Echo” and the “Cardiac Anatomy Imaging Plane Workshop”;
• “Assessment of the Left Ventricle and Right Ventricle Systolic Function and Regional Wall Motion,” “Tricuspid and Pulmonic Valve” and the workshop “Knobology — Improving the Image”;
• “Intraoperative Examination: Indications, Contraindications, Safety, Comprehensive Examination,” “Cardiac Hemodynamics” and “Hemodynamics Workshop”;
• “Organization of an Intraoperative Echo Service” and the “Thoracic Aorta”;
• “Common Platforms and Knobs.”
ASA is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education programs for physicians. ASA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14 hours in category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.

The registration fee is $300 for ASA active members, $125 for resident members and $750 for nonmembers. The fee includes morning coffee and rolls, luncheons and coffee breaks and must accompany the registration form to guarantee enrollment. The registration deadline is May 2, 2003.
