2003 ASA Annual Meeting Update
The 2003 Annual Meeting in San Francisco will include
more sessions than ever before. Each Problem-Based Learning
Discussion (PBLD) will be offered twice, and more Basic
Science Reviews and panels will be available. Six workshops
are new this year: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Handheld
Computers, Management of Patients Exposed to Weapons
of Mass Destruction, Neurological Examination for the
Pain Physician, Ophthalmic Regional Anesthesia and a
cadaver workshop. The cadaver workshop will be held
on Saturday and Sunday.
In a departure from the traditional schedule, all Refresher
Course Lectures, Clinical Updates and Basic Science
Reviews will begin one-half hour earlier than in the
past.
For preregistrants, name badges and tickets will be
sent in the mail, as was done in 2002. Registration
will open on Friday, October 10, at 3 p.m. in Hall D
of the Moscone Center.
One of the major changes for the 2003 Annual Meeting
concerns continuing medical education (CME) certificates.
Because of new AMA requirements for reporting and awarding
CME credit, the certificates for the Annual Meeting
will be mailed in November. Further, CME credit will
be awarded for ASA’s educational sessions only.
CME credit will not be awarded for time spent in committee
meetings, the House of Delegates sessions and other
political activities. Specifics of the reporting process
will be provided in future NEWSLETTERs and on the ASA
Web site.
To underscore the importance of science at the Annual
Meeting, the Scientific Paper Poster Sessions have been
moved out of the exhibit hall. They will be in Hall
D of the Moscone Center on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Hall D also is the location of the Registration Area.
Each day’s posters will be available for viewing
the entire day, instead of for a two-hour period.
A reception for attendees will be held in the exhibit
hall on Sunday, October 11, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The
reception allows unopposed time with the exhibitors.
Each registrant will receive one complimentary drink
ticket. Additional beverages can be purchased.
The Committee on Local Arrangements has added a special
event for Monday night, October 13. The Philharmonia
Baroque Orchestra will perform exclusively for ASA at
the historic Herbst Theater. American’s most exciting
period-instrument orchestra is renowned for historically
informed performance of Baroque, classical and early
romantic music on original instruments.
Registration booklets are scheduled to be mailed the
first week of June. Online registration will be available
at that time at <www2.ASAhq.org>.
The preregistration deadline is September 10,
2003.
