ASA Web Site Casting Its ’Net Wide

Looking for the date and location of an anesthesia-related conference? Want to keep up to date on the latest political events pertinent to anesthesiology? Would you like easy and instant access to hundreds of links in every facet of the specialty? Of course you do, and the answers to all your questions can be found on the ASA Web site.

Technology Made Simple
The rapid advance of computer and Web-based technology can be daunting even for the technologically adept. But ASA’s number-one priority in the redesign and restructure of its Web site was to make it user-friendly, efficient and accessible to everyone.

In 2001, ASA’s Web site had a daily average of 1,846 visitor sessions per day. In 2002, that number increased to an average of 4,432 visitor sessions per day! The growing number of visitors to the site attest to the fact that members, members-to-be and the lay public are reaping the benefits of this powerful tool.

New graphics and a more intuitive interface make the site more cosmetically appealing, but the improvements are anything but superficial. The “What’s New” section is updated as quickly as news happens. Whether there is a Food and Drug Administration alert pertinent to anesthesiology or a congressional decision from Washington that will affect the specialty, you will find information about it on the ASA Web site.

Meetings Made Easy
Registration for the Annual Meeting has never been easier. 2002 marked the first year that attendees could register for the Annual Meeting through the Web site, and 2,575 attendees chose to do so. That number will certainly increase in 2003 as more attendees realize how easy it is to search the meeting database, create an itinerary and register for events online.

Through the “Calendars for Meetings” database, members also can find information on seminars, conferences and other anesthesiology-related activities.

Unlimited Resources
With its dedicated “Members Only” section, the Web site is a useful tool for ASA members to maintain their member profiles, pay their dues online and have access to the latest member news and updates.

Whether you are a high school student or a resident in training, ASA’s “Resident and Career information” section can be an important resource for anyone interested in pursuing a career in anesthesiology. Job seekers as well as potential employers will find the “ASA placement Service” an invaluable tool for screening and posting practice opportunities.

Publications and Services
The Web site also provides resources for the lay public, including patient education brochures, informative slide shows and “frequently asked questions” sections that provide information for both physician and patient.

The site can truly be a one-stop shopping trip for information on any ASA activity or product. Almost all ASA publications, from standards and guidelines to patient education brochures, are available to view online. For the months of January 2003 through March 2003, the “Publications and Services” page was the second most visited of the entire site.

If it happens that the ASA Web site is not able to directly supply you with the information you need, the exhaustive “Links of Interest” section will lead you to any anesthesiology-related subject you desire.
