Residents' Review

‘Residents’ Review’ Needs You!

Jill M. Mhyre, M.D., Editor
Residents’ Review

It has been a pleasure to serve as the “Residents’ Review” editor for the past year and a half. The position has been an excellent introduction to ASA. I attended the Resident Component Governing Council meetings, the Committee on Newsletter meeting and the Resident Component House of Delegates meetings, each of which offered a unique opportunity to meet the leaders of ASA, hear about the major issues addressed by ASA and to think critically about some of the approaches and directions that our specialty is taking, particularly with regard to residents.

Between writing two to four articles per year and editing an article each month, I have learned about a variety of issues facing both anesthesiologists and residents that I would otherwise understand only peripherally. Examples include the new Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education work hours limitations, the FICA reimbursement issue, medical liability insurance and the opportunities and limitations afforded by the J-1 visa. I also have had an opportunity to influence the national dialogue on resident education and the role of residents within ASA.

We are currently actively recruiting a succeeding editor. If you are a CA-1 or CA-2 resident, if you enjoy the ASA NEWSLETTER and would like to increase your involvement in ASA, please consider this position. The position is voluntary, but travel expenses are covered for the meetings of the Resident Component Governing Council.

We plan to make two important changes to the “Residents’ Review” column editor position that are designed to make the job easier. First, we plan to transition back to a co-editorial staffing model, with a junior editor and a senior editor working together. I will continue as the senior editor for another year, offering topic suggestions, editorial advice and other assistance to the new editor. That person will stay on the next year to help the following editor.

Second, we plan to introduce a resolution at the Resident Component House of Delegates this fall in San Francisco, California, to make the “Residents’ Review Column Editor” an elected position. Candidates would submit a resumé, a list of topic ideas and a sample column, rather than give a speech. Voting will be based on the quality of the column and the topic ideas. If the resolution passes, we will vote for our first editor in October 2004, and that person will serve through 2006.

If you are interested in volunteering for 2003-05, please send a copy of your resume, a list of topic ideas and a sample column to <jmmhyre@umich.edu> by August 1, 2003. The ASA Resident Governing Council will review the applicant materials and make a decision at the August meeting and will announce the new editor by September 1, 2003.
