Anesthesia Foundation Needs Your Help to Help Residents

Thomas G. Johans, M.D., Vice-President
The Anesthesia Foundation

The Anesthesia Foundation is a freestanding, independent, philanthropic organization that provides financial aid to needy residents in anesthesiology programs. The Foundation receives no financial support or grants from ASA or any other anesthesia body. Its resources come entirely through contributions of practicing anesthesiologists, residency program directors and regional anesthesiology organizations. The generosity of ASA membership make up almost half of the Foundation’s annual income. I hope you will find the Foundation’s mission worthy of a donation.

I am sure you are aware of the substantial indebtedness most residents carry today. A survey performed a number of years ago by one of our trustees, Michael P. Smith, M.D., showed that the average indebtedness of a doctor starting his or her residency was $65,000. One can only imagine what that number is today. Although the salaries of residents today are substantially higher than when most active members were in training, they still do not cover the resident’s debt-service obligations and cost of living. This debt places considerable stress on trainees when they are expected to give full attention to a formidable didactic and clinical curriculum.

The future of our specialty rests with our physicians in residency. By helping the Foundation, you will, in a very real way, “foster the growth and strength of our specialty.”

Thanking you in advance for your kindness.
