FAER Honorary Research Lecture:
Jeanine P. Wiener-Kronish, M.D., to Describe Her Pathways From the Laboratory Incubator to the Patient’s Bedside

Carl C. Hug, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., Immediate Past President
Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research

Jeanine P. Wiener-Kronish, M.D.
The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) will present the third annual FAER Honorary Research Lecture at the 2003 ASA Annual Meeting in San Francisco. FAER has created this annual lectureship as a means of recognizing outstanding scholarship by anesthesiologists in an effort to encourage young anesthesiologists to consider careers in research and teaching, which are crucial if anesthesiology is to maintain its reputation as a medical specialty continuously striving for excellence in patient care.

Dr. Wiener-Kronish’s lecture, “Critical Infections — From Genes to the Bedside,” will take place on Monday, October 13, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gateway Ballroom 102 in the Moscone Convention Center.

Dr. Wiener-Kronish is a tenured professor of anesthesia and vice-chair of the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). She chose to enter the UCSF anesthesiology residency training program in 1984 after being fully trained and board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonology and critical care. With a broad background in medicine and science plus a lot of hard work and very efficient management of time, she has managed to achieve more by her mid-career than most would be happy to have accomplished in a lifetime. Among her accomplishments are:

• Election to the Institute of Medicine in 2002

• Election as secretary of the Academic Senate of UCSF in 2001

• Serving as a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Surgery, Anesthesia and Trauma Study Section for four years

• Mentoring of nine physicians and 16 research fellows over the past 15 years

• Attracting 21 medical students to the anesthesiology research laboratories over the past 10 years

• Competing successfully for more than $5.5 million in research funding, including $2.9 million for two current NIH RO1 grants

• Publishing 72 original basic science and clinical research manuscripts in the most rigorously peer-reviewed journals devoted to pulmonology, cardiology, critical care and anesthesiology.

• Writing 22 reviews, five editorials, 34 chapters and 103 abstracts, many with her trainees.

Of special note is the fact that the majority of her publications have been in nonanesthesiology journals, thereby expanding the awareness and influence of our specialty beyond its traditional boundaries.

With all of the above achievements, she has continued to have a full life outside of medicine. She and Daniel Kronish, M.D., celebrated 30 years of marriage this year and are the parents of a daughter named Jessica, who is graduating from Johns Hopkins University this year, and Sam, who is in the 6th grade. They all join in annual family vacations, including biking trips in North America and Europe. One or more exchange students take up residence in their home most summers, which has led to fluency in several foreign languages. On top of all of this, Dr. Wiener-Kronish takes the time to exercise daily and to be involved in her community.

I would say that Dr. Wiener-Kronish has a lot to teach us about combining a stellar career in academic anesthesiology with a rewarding life outside of medicine that, most importantly, focuses on her family.
