Research to Take Center Stage at ASA Annual Meeting
The hour allotted to the Emery A. Rovenstine Memorial Lecture on Monday, October 13, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., will include not just this prestigious lecture but the presentation of a number of awards. Terri G. Monk, M.D., will present the Rovenstine Lecture on “Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction: The Next Challenge in Geriatric Anesthesia.” Following the lecture, awards will be given in the following areas:

Award for Excellence in Research – Mervyn Maze, M.D.
Residents’ Research Essay Contest, First Place – Norbert Topf, M.D.
Distinguished Service Award – Bernard V. Wetchler, M.D.
Presidential Scholar Award – Peter J. Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D.

Michael M. Todd, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the journal Anesthesiology, will present the Award for Excellence in Research. Michael K. Cahalan, M.D., chair of the ASA Committee on Research, will present the Residents’ Research Essay Contest and Presidential Scholar Awards.

The Celebration of Research will follow the Rovenstine Lecture from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. During the session, Drs. Maze and Topf and the Presidential Scholar will present a concise overview of their works. Dr. Todd will moderate a 15-minute panel discussion with audience participation following the presentations.

The focus on research will continue during the Third Annual Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Honorary Research Lecture from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Jeanine P. Wiener-Kronish, M.D., will speak on “Critical Infections — From Genes to the Bedside.” The FAER Panel follows from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. “Transforming the Medical Specialty of Anesthesiology: The Challenge of the 21st Century” is the topic and will be moderated by Sean K. Kennedy, M.D.

All of these events will be held at the Moscone Center.


Residents’ Research Essay Contest Recipients Honored
Michael K. Cahalan, M.D., Chair of the Committee on Research, has announced that the committee will award prizes for the following three entries in the ASA 2003 Residents’ Research Essay Contest:

First Prize
Norbert Topf, M.D., Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, New York, for: “A Mutant GABAA Receptor With Normal GABA Sensitivity but Selective Sensitivity to Different Volatile Anesthetics.”

Second Prize
Satoki Inoue, M.D., Neuroanesthesia Research, VA Medical Center, University of California-San Diego, San Diego, California, for: “Isoflurane and Caspase 8 Inhibition Reduce Cerebral Injury in Rats Subjected to Focal Cerebral Ischemia.”

Third Prize
Markus W. Hollmann, M.D., Ph.D., Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, New York, for: “Time-Dependent Inhibition of G Protein-Coupled Receptor Signaling by Local Anesthetics.”.


Annual Meeting Registration Just Got Easier!
Registration for the ASA 2003 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, is now available on the Web, and the process has never been more convenient.

Just log on to <www2.ASAhq.org> and navigate through the ASA Annual Meeting online registration icons. You will be able to access everything from scientific abstracts to exhibitor information plus find hints on what to do in your spare time in San Francisco.

Remember that the preregistration deadline is September 10 and that no refunds or exchanges will be made after September 10.
