the past 31 years, with 15 of those years as Executive
Director.
Thomas M. Bruckman is the new FAER
Executive Director. For the past 10 years, he served
as the Executive Director and CEO of the American Foundation
for Urologic Disease, a nonprofit organization whose
mission is the prevention and cure of urologic disease
through the expansion of medical research, public education
and patient awareness. Mr. Bruckman will bring professional
development experience to the board and Foundation.
New Activities
Last year FAER established Strategic Planning, Education
and Mentoring committees. These committees met last
May. Ideas brought forth from the May meeting guided
discussion at a retreat last August.
Strategic Planning Retreat
The goal of the retreat was to discuss implementation
strategies for FAER in developing solutions to the current
problems facing academic anesthesiology in research
and education. Attendees appear below.

M.D.; Ronald D. Miller, M.D.; and Mr. Thomas M. Bruckman.
A formal report from this meeting will be available
after the ASA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California.
Education Committee
Charged with emphasizing the “E” in FAER,
the Education Committee preliminarily proposed a possible
new grant for educational activities that might be called
a “Career Development Award for Educational Research.”
The purpose of this grant is to develop faculty who
conduct research on the process of education and not
primarily to train “good teachers.” The
committee will continue to work on ideas to promote
more effective education techniques of anesthesiologists.
Mentorship Committee
Entrusted with increasing awareness of the importance
FAER places on mentoring, the Mentorship Committee considered
the need to get more mentors actively involved. Four
preliminary recommendations to be discussed further
include: mentorship stipend; national symposium or workshop
on mentoring; Academy of Mentors; departmental Research
Starter Grants.
Abbott Laboratories has contributed funds to FAER as
a founding member of these mentoring programs.
