Call for Committees
Brian
N. Vaughan, M.D., Chair
ASA Resident Component
Once again it was great to see the leadership shown
by residents at this year’s ASA Annual Meeting
and Resident Component House of Delegates. Although
as residents we are busy, it is vital to maintain
this enthusiasm throughout the year. We cannot let
ourselves become too focused on the technical aspects
of our education and forget the big picture. Now is
the time to become involved. Learning the issues,
building consensus and making progress takes time.
Only by starting now can results be expected in the
near future and in the next 20 years.
Each year ASA invites residents to sit as adjunct
members on several of its committees. This is a win-win
situation for ASA and the Resident Component. As residents
we have a unique perspective to bring to the table,
and resident input often has an important role in
shaping committee decisions. Serving as an adjunct
member provides residents with the opportunity to
learn more about governance within ASA, to develop
one’s leadership skills and to explore an issue
in-depth.
With approximately 50 ASA standing committees, there
are positions to satisfy a variety of interests. A
complete listing of the committees can be found at
<www.ASAhq.org/aboutAsa/asaCommitteeListing.htm>.
Last year residents served as adjunct members on 38
of these committees. Although we have representation
on most, we should strive to have resident representation
on every committee.
Depending on the workload, committee meetings occur
up to three times per year; the minimum requirement
is a yearly meeting held at the time of the Annual
Meeting. Business between meetings is usually conducted
via e-mail or conference call. The positions now being
filled will begin their terms after the 2004 Annual
Meeting and will serve through the end of the 2005
Annual Meeting. Although their term may fall after
the completion of their residency, current CA-3s are
encouraged to apply for committee appointments.
Residents who would like to serve on a committee should
submit a curriculum vitae and a letter of introduction
describing their desired positions. Application materials
should be sent directly to: Brian N. Vaughan, M.D.,
Chair, ASA Resident Component, 6205 Farrington Road,
Apartment N8, Chapel Hill, NC 27517. Materials are
due by Friday, December 19, 2003.
