Grant Application Increase Shows Healthy Growth; 2003 Award Recipients Announced

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Board of Directors is pleased to announce 10 award recipients from the August 2003 submissions (seven Research Training Grants, one Research Starter Grant and two Research Education Grants). The news this year is quite good. The ASA Committee on Research reported that the quality of the proposals was the best in recent memory. The yearly applications increased from 36 to 45 (25 percent), and the FAER Board voted to fund 19 out of 45 (42 percent).

We now have 30 active grants and have committed program expenditures of $1.4 million for the year versus $70,000 in 2002. In spite of this significant increase, there remained several grant-worthy proposals that we are unable to fund. Their existence is good news and a challenge to generate ongoing support for anesthesiology research.

FAER Mentorship Program
In addition to the outstanding new recipients, the FAER Board is initiating a program to recognize the past, present and future contributions of research mentors. At the fall FAER Board meeting, John P. Kampine, M.D., Ph.D., and Mentor Committee members, Ronald G. Pearl, M.D., Ph.D., Ronald D. Miller, M.D., Alex S. Evers, M.D., and Simon Gelman, M.D., Ph.D., recommended that FAER initiate a Mentorship Award and establish an Academy of Mentors. This academy will recognize academic anesthesiologists and others who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the development of young anesthesiologist investigators. This should be a highly select group who will be a resource for the development of new mentors and role models in academic anesthesiology.

Congratulations again to the following award recipients and their mentors.
