FAER Announces New Research Grants

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Board of Directors met on May 19-20, 2004, and after significant preparation, deliberation and motivation, voted to approve several landmark programs to better serve the needs of anesthesiology educators, mentors, researchers and practitioners. These precedent-setting decisions include approval of the new Mentored Research Training Grant (RTG) with the added $40,000-per-year award for the mentor and the new two-year Research in Education Grant (REG) with an award of $50,000 per year.

For more information on these awards and for updated application materials, visit the FAER Web site at <www.faer.org/grants.php>.

Mentored Research Training Grant (RTG)

FAER will increase the amount of the existing FAER RTG with an additional award of $40,000 per year for the two-year grant to be provided to the mentor of the awardee with a requirement for a minimum of 40 percent time allotment for the mentor for nonclinical time for research activity. This amount will be in addition to the basic RTG award of $75,000 for the first year and $100,000 for the second.

The Mentored RTG will begin for those applications submitted by the August 15, 2004, deadline and will replace the previous RTG.

Research in Education Grant (REG)
FAER will initiate a $50,000-per-year, two-year REG to interested faculty at any level of appointment. This grant will replace the previous $25,000 Education Research Grant. Mentoring is encouraged for all applicants and required for those with assistant professor or lower faculty appointments. Applicants are encouraged to seek mentoring outside the anesthesiology department and medical school when such is not available from within.

The REG will begin for those applications submitted by the August 15, 2004, deadline and will replace the previous Education Research Grant.
